30-9-2009 - Iron Deficiency~ what foods to eat? okMy mood while writing this blog:

My brother and his girlfriend had their first baby yesterday!! I was so excited to go and visit her in the hospital. She is just beautiful and her name is Mikaela Marie. Big girl weighing 9lbs 5oz.

Yesterday the doctor's office called and said that the doctor had a message for me so I stopped in there and they said that my bloodwork came back saying that I am iron deficient. Anything under a 12 is bad and I am at a 9. I have never had this before. I am taking my multi-vitamin every day so the nurse just said that I should eat foods high in iron and come back for more blood work next month to re-check. Has anyone else had this during pregnancy and what food should I be eating? (I am researching on the internet, but I like realistic advice also) Will low iron affect the pregnancy in any way or just me?

I was 9.5 then went down to 8.5 now I'm just 12 which is fab. I was given preg aday tablets but I ate lots of greens and red meats.You will be fine hun.xx

I had the same problem when pregnant and no matter how much greens and red meat I ate, I was always deficient. So I started taking a liquid supplement and that did the trick! Also, it did NOT constipate me which iron supplements tend to do! But, if it does - eat a kiwi and that will fix you right up!!! I highly recommend a good liquid supplement - mix it with water and drink away! xox

just noticed your blog and I have iron deficiency too. If your not a leafy greens eater or a meat eater a couple of good foods is cream of wheat cereal and ovaltine malt drink both have a ton of iron. Also I would highly recommend floradix liquid iron (you can google it) it won't make you constipated like iron pills tend to do.

i have low iron, last time i got blood work i was borderline anemic, i was told to take an iron supplement on top of my prenatal but its different for everyone, sometimes just food will do it! dark meat and green veggies tho for sure!
