23-3-2011 - 20 weeks!

My mood while writing this blog:
relaxed

So I am 20weeks today :) feels so good to be at that half way point :) has been a pretty full on couple of weeks. Um, we have found out that our baby is a boy :) very stoked about that! Now to come up with a name. We also found out that our baby's right kidney is damaged and not functioning properly. He also has a spot on his heart which dr's are pretty sure is just a calcification that will resolve itself over time but are still keeping an eye on it. The specialist we saw at 19weeks gave us a pretty grim outlook. He said that with the high risk screening at 12 weeks, the kidney and the heart thing that our baby is going to have problems. We know that the kidney is an issue and he did tell us that if it was that on it's own it wouldn't be a big deal but because there are 3 things that are there that shouldn't be it is waving big red flags. He told us that while the left kidney is looking ok at that point in time he does expect that one to go bad too. He explained to us that the extra fluid baby had at the 12wk scan was probably indicating the kidney problem (extra fluid can indicate either chromosomal abnormalities or organ problems) because baby doesnt have any other markers for downs or trisomy (so that is a relief). Anyway, he said our best case scenario is that baby has IUGR and is taken early and has surgery on the kidney (to either remove it or fix it i dont know) and our worst case scenario is that baby doesnt survive the pregnancy. We are keeping positive though that baby will make it and our goal is to make it to at least 34wks. We will meet with our OB every 4wks for now then 2nd weekly once we get a bit further. The specialist will see me at 28wks for another U'S then again at 32wks for another U'S and he wants to do an amnio then aswell. We're not sure if we will or not as dr said we have a high chance of going into labor (but he did say he hoped i would) and so it just depends on how well baby is doing at that point in time i guess. Also I will be getting U'S with my OB every month, and if things look any worse more frequently. But yeah..we dont know a great deal right now but we will find out everything next Friday when i see my OB again.
On a positive note, baby kicks alot! it is nice feeling him move and wiggle inside :) For those of you that read this that are on my FB please do not post my baby's gender on my FB because we havent told family yet and we dont think we will so SSSSH. lol thanks gals xx Hope you're all keeping well xx
