My mood while writing this blog: Ok |
Things are getting better, but definitely not easy! I ended up with a staph infection in the hospital for which I had to take antibiotics. And of course, the antibiotics killed all the good bacteria in my body as well creating an overgrowth of yeast causing a yeast infection in my breasts/nipples and gave the baby thrush. This has been a very painful 5 weeks of breastfeeding but at least no one can accuse me of not trying! Another problem we ran into was the fact that my little girl didn't gain her birth weight back fast enough so I had to start supplementing with formula to get her weight up and now she's a little chunk LOL She was weighing 10lbs 4oz 2 days shy of 5 weeks! I really hate that she has to have formula too but it's kind of a catch 22, she gets the formula therefore my body doesn't know I need to make more milk and because I don't make enough milk, she needs formula. I'm hoping this breast pain will go away soon so I can pump more frequently. I've tried drinking non-alcoholic beer and have been taking fenugreek but it's just not cutting it. It probably doesn't help that I don't get up and pump on the rare occasion that she sleeps longer than 2 hours. I hope all of you ladies are doing well and I miss you all!

Thursday, 29 Oct Pumping is not like the baby sucking - it's not as strong and you won't get anything near what the baby would take on her own. So in the end, yes, it can diminish your milk supply. And I was advised not to pump for the first 8 weeks but to let baby suck on demand. I had the same problem with my daughter not gaining weight in the early weeks but a lactation specialist told me to stop the formula "top up" that we were doing and just feed on demand which in reality meant I was breastfeeding my daughter all day long, at every hour! But, after about 8 weeks (which is really how long you should give it), we were like pros and she had been gaining weight steadily since the 3rd week. No formula ever needed again! You have to persist is all. I also took a brewer's yeast supplemetn which didn't increase my supply, it just helped with a faster let down which meant my daughter didnt' get tired or frustrated so easily and she was able to get the fatty part of the milk before sleeping! She is 12 1/2 months now and we are still breastfeeding but slowly weaning! Good luck - don't give up - persist if you really want to breastfeed!! xox Mommy2anArmyBrat -
Thursday, 29 Oct Does non-alcohlic beer REALLY help with the milk supply??? Anyway girl dont feel bad.. cause when i was unable to breast feed i pumped which in return as you know lowered my milk supply too.. but i went back to breastfeeding full time but i am not makeing anough to satisfy her so i have to suppliment too.. what i am using is "Semiulac infant formula with easy shield with DHA & ARA" it helps build an immune system and closet thing you can get to breast milk.. she actually REALLY likes the stuff.. alot.. sometimes she prefers it.. which breaks my heart lol
