24-5-2008 - 11 weeks and something in a quandaryMy mood while writing this blog:
in a quandary

I've shared my news with some local friends. People I can count on for support. Family, mostly far away, and mostly not major contributors to my sense of CALM, will have to wait. When I had my little girl, all anyone ever wanted to talk to me about was my pregnancy, my labor, and what method of childbirth I should use and what method of handling I should employ once she was born. It was advice, it was intrusive and very often inappropriate, and it was forgetting all about ME. This was a big thing in my life, the biggest. But there was a lot more to me too, and I felt forgotten and tossed aside. That made me sad. I still remember this quite well, and it makes me want to spring it on them all when I'm just about to go into labor! You know, "Guess what Mom! I'm having a baby! Right now!!!!" Then I could skip all that other stuff, and just get right to the introductions. Selfish, maybe... But I can dream, can't I? And then there's the daughter, now 6, whose dream is the be a big sister. I've been trying for years to make it so, and I have failed five times now. I sure don't want to tell her the good news and then rip it away from her if it doesn't work out. Annnd, I'd hate to share it with her unless I were ready for the whole rest of the world to hear about it too!

So here I am, 11 weeks and some days, and I'm starting to get the sense that this may be the embryo that doesn't run away from me. This may be the embryo that becomes a fetus and then even a baby. The little brother or sister my girl will be proud to announce. The one we've been waiting for all this time.

I went to wait for DD at her school bus stop yesterday. A neighbor's child sprang off the bus first and approached me. She has Asperger's and I now remember that pregnant ladies happen to be one of her idiosyncratic obsessions. As she approached, she stooped down and studied my midsection carefully from ALL angles, while the other children continued to unload and cross the street toward us. I did the same to her very noticeably so that she'd notice there had been something funny about her behavior. She said, "Oh...It's just that...you look kind of pregnant..." I just said, "Huh. You think so?" and then directed my attention to my daughter and other children that had come home. I'm glad that the rest of the neighbors can't trouble themselves to wait at the bus stop and greet their children when they come home, b/c that could have been so much more awkward. I'm praying that this little stinker doesn't spread the news to the whole world over the weekend and ruin it for my daughter. Only time will tell this story...
