My mood while writing this blog: sleepy... |
I went in Sunday morning, and the Dr. told me to come later that night and admit myself for an induction. So I went in at midnight, got settled, and by 2 am they administered the prostoglandin gel, and put the monitors on for an hour. I started cramping wihtin 10 minutes, but it was still manageable, and hearing the baby's heartbeat was quite soothing. Anyways, dropped in and out of sleep till around 5 am, after which the cramping was quite bad - and I knew well this is it. Took a shower, and managed the pain till 6.30 - after which i was told the Dr. would come in at 7.30 to check my progress. By 8 she still hasnt shown up and when she does come, I'm still only 1cm dilated, and contracting every 2-3 minutes. OUCH. I thought i was doing so well... she administered another dose of the gel, and thats when the contractions came on SO much stronger, and the darned nurse wouldnt get the CTG to monitor the strength of the contractions coz she wouldnt believe they were so bad. I yelled for my own dr. by 8.45 and she came in before 9 am... the CTG was on - and she ordered a flush of the second dose of the gel, and ofcourse there was a change in shift of the residents. So the second resident comes in - and decides my body is normalizing and i dont need the flush! I was taken to L&D and took the gas to manage pain, all the time questioning why the second dose of gel has still not been removed. The resident came back - did the flush - but by then it was 10.15 and still only 1cm, wiht contractions 45-60 seconds apart and hard labor. Several drugs were administered to calm down the uterus - but the damage was done and the uterus had been over stimulated. I had to be the 1/100 cases where the uterus is sensitive to the prostoglandin gel and hyper-reacted. Super - baby was still in -3, and no pain relief, with hard contractions. One hour later, the Head Gynae appeared, and I'm starting to hear talks of a C-section. She checks, and still only 1cm at 11.30. Managing the pain only with gas, and registering some pretty strong contractions. Baby's heart rate was dropping and they kept having me shift directions to monitor what was going on. So that was it at 11.45 i was wheeled to the Operating Theater, by gas supply removed, and in between contractions I was prepped for surgery. It was comforting to see that my Dr did the C - and did not allow my case to be passed. She really was comforting through the whole OR experience.. and at 12.12 pm my precious was born with a full head of hair. The experience was surreal, I missed out on being able to hold him because of all the wires running in and out of me, and I don't think I cried so much in my life - both with the misery of the contractions, the non dialation, and then seeing my son... who I have now fallen in love with. Recovery is slow - but such is life after a major surgery... I have my baby and am happy to block out what happened. Hez my SUPERSTAR.
