My mood while writing this blog: can\'t stop smiling! |
Jake was tagged by some friends on Facebook to fill out 25 random things and repost to the Facebook community. What I read made my heart smile...
1. I just had a baby girl.
2. omgwtf I have a baby GIRL. If it had been a boy, he'd be in week 2 of his "training" right now. With Jaina, she's gonna have to choose her own path, and I'll just follow behind.
3. Still, I hope she becomes an archeologist, like Indiana Jones, or Laura Dern in Jurassic Park. I'm definitely going to impart nerdiness upon my daughter.
3. It's a good thing we got as much safari-print stuff as we did while we were expecting, otherwise we'd be completely over-run with pink stuff already. Dad thinks that yellow is her color, anyway.
4. Me & Meeg have begun referring to ourselves in the third person as Mom & Dad, kinda like Jimmy on Seinfeld.
5. Jaina's Grandparents are both named Dave & Vicki (and step-G'pa Steve).
6. We put about five seconds into picking Jaina's name. Let me re-enact:
Jake: What girls' names do you like?
Meegan: I like Jane, or Anna...
Jake: How 'bout Jaina?
7. We only settled on a boy's name in, like, the last week, cuz we had to.
8. It's pronounced like Jane-uh, ie. J-aina, Jai-na, or Jain-a, not Ja-ina. Both Grandmas called her Gina the first two days. (I call her Poopcheeks.)
9. An employee at St. Mary's Hospital called her Jana Glees the other day. Our last name is Gless, ie. rhymes with Less. Unless you're an Indian telemarketer, I don't know where you'd get that long 'e' from.
10. We gave Jaina the Native American middle name, Wekshi, which is Potawatomi for Fox. My Mother's paternal line is French-Canadian, as is my Dad's paternal line--to some extent--as well. The fox is a symbol of the French Revolution, the French-Canadians assimilated the Ojibwa culture when they settled in Michigan, and, likewise, I don't think it's just coincidence that my best friend since age 3 is Potawatomi.
11. The fox, or kitsune, also has mythological power in Japanese culture, being known for disguising themselves as women, and fucking shit up.
12. We're using a cloth diaper service, and even though that puts us in the minority as parents, I couldn't imagine doing it any other way. So far, the standard MO is to change her diaper so she'll wake up and eat, then change it again immediately afterward. The other night, we changed four diapers in a row before we were able to get her little pink pants back on.
13. Grandma came over this morning and helped give Jaina her first bath, in this, day 10 of her life. Then she pooped in her towel while Mom was drying her off.
14. Not only am I good at changing diapers, but I am an expert swaddler. Among all of my storied arts & crafts history, I attribute this ability most to my time spent rolling burritos at Qdoba.
15. I met Jaina's mom at 1:30am at Mulligan's the night of my "golden" birthday. I hadn't seen her in almost a decade since high school, and when I yelled out her name, she turned, squinted at me, and said, "Do I know you?"
16. Three days after we moved in together, I brought Meegan some flowers home after work, and she handed me a pregnancy test. We went out for Chinese food that night, and the fortune in my cookie read: Your life's foundation is becoming quite strong.
17. Even though we never knew what gender we were having, both Me & Meeg only had dreams about a baby girl. But the entire day during the induced labor, I was certain it was a boy because of all the shit our baby was putting Meegan through.
18. When we were in the operating room for the Caesarean, my life became divided into two parts: Before, and then after we heard the ear-piercing cry come from behind the drapery.
19. I've never been as stressed as I was the first week of Jaina's life. I can't imagine how anyone could ever endure their first newborn if they weren't absolutely ecstatic about it.
20. Grandpa Dave Lee cried the hardest when I came out to the waiting room to make the announcement.
21. When I see Jaina with Meegan, I realize I couldn't ever love her as much as her mother does. The emotion I feel is the opposite of jealousy.
22. We are so incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from all of our friends and family. I am truly humbled.
23. Aunt Cindy got us a vibrating hammock chair for our baby shower, which I thought seemed kinda irrelevant, considering we already had a carseat and a 3-in-1 swing/rocker. Jaina will sleep for 3+ hours in Aunt Cindy's chair. It's now known as the magic chair.
24. When we have to wake her up, she stretches her arms way above her head, arches her eyebrows real high, and makes duck lips.
25. Every day Jaina is more alert, and every night she sleeps longer and longer. She only cries when she's hungry or wet or wants attention. Life is getting so much better all the time.
