04-3-2009 - becoming jaina amazed & proudMy mood while writing this blog:
amazed & proud

It is absolutely amazing to watch Jaina become her own little person. She is five weeks today, and so far has accomplished 1. looking directly at us 2. grabbing fingers 3. squeaking, grunting & an occasional coo 4. holding up her head while on her tummy 5. she rolled over (from stomach to back) and 6. she is realizing that when she screams, she gets cuddled. When she's awake she likes to swing or have tummy time. Jake flies her around airplane-style and bounces her. We listen to music (she likes the Beatles) and we sing and dance along. She enjoys the bath - we have a giant mirror over the bathroom sinks and she watches herself as we clean her.

Breastfeeding is going better than I could ever have imagined...I'm producing enough milk to feed a small country...she's eating well and gaining good weight - Hooray! I have yet to bust out the pump (hehe, no pun intended) - I'm still slightly intimidated by it. I know it needs to be done soon, the sooner the better, it'd be nice to have Grandma babysit while Jake and I take a night out.

The cloth diapers are also going better than expected. I thought when we went out for the day, we would use disposables...but we've realized that cloth are just as easy as the disposables. We have plastic bags - kind of like the ones people use to pickup their dog's poop - that keep the dirty cloths from stinking up and soaking everything else in the diaper bag. The diaper service we are using delivers clean diapers once a week and picks up the dirty ones. Last week Jake was in the shower and I slept right through the delivery...Yikes! They were nice and left the clean cloths outside our door, but we sat all week with two bags of dirty diaps...good thing her poop isn't stinky yet!

My first 'I can't believe I did that' story: After a feeding yesterday, she was very calm and we were sitting on the couch together. I had noticed earlier in the morning that she had scratches on the side of her face and knew it was time to clip those fingernails. We did really good up until her last thumb, we couldn't have timed it any more wrongly; she twitched, while I clamped and we must have realized at the same time what happened because she screamed as I gasped! Yup, I clipped her thumb and she bled. We both cried while I held a washcloth on it...

On a lighter note, the weather seems to be breaking and the sun has been out more the past week...maybe Old Man Winter has blown through and Spring is peeking in (keeping my fingers crossed) I'm looking forward to getting outside and doing some walking.

Don't let the pump intimidate you. As with much in life, taking on the mentality of, "I've SO got this under control. It is my beotch" creates the internal feeling of success... and that's a really smooth road once it's paved! I would suggest the first couple times of doing it a. while looking at Jaina (dad's got her or she's napping) and NOT the freaky way the thing pulls at your nips and b. doing it in the am and c. NOT counting the ounces that come out of you. It will be low at first, even with a good milk supply... you're just not used to "letting" yourself let-down into a machine!! Good luck, sweets! Though you don't need it, cuz you OWN that Medela!!!
