30-7-2008 - 5 reasons NOT to go to vegas when you're prego glad to be home!My mood while writing this blog:
glad to be home!

so, about a month before i found out i was pregnant, the hubs and i planned a trip to vegas. we had been trying to get pregnant for a year, and figured it would be a good time to relax, blow off some steam, and get one last "hoorah" in before i hopefully got pregnant. little did i know that i would be 8 weeks prego by the time we went. so the day finally came, we packed our bags, drove to the airport, and got on the plane. i was feeling my usual dizzy, nauseous, killer sore boobs, hungry every 2 hours, exhausted, pregnant self. what happened over the course of the next 5 days i was totally unprepared for!

1. PLANES- so, you know that gravity/nauseous feeling you get sometimes when an airplane takes off? that feeling, on top of your normal nausea is a little overwhelming! as soon as the plane started moving, i started feeling queasy. once we started to accelerate, i felt my stomach churn and crazily started digging through the in flight magazines and safety manuals for the barf bag. i was sure i was going to blow... but thanks to calm, encouraging words from the hubs and some deep breathing, i was fine by the time we made our ascent! there were a few other squeamish circumstances during the flight, but i made it off the plane with all the contents of my stomach in place.

2. ELEVATORS- just like the plane, old, crappy elevators give you that "ugh" nauseous feeling. as a compliment, our hotel gave us a room on the 24th floor, only the elevator to get us there was jerky, and made your stomach drop every with every floor. i absolutely DREADED going up to the room- even if it did mean going to take a nap!

3. SMELL- i have noticed since i've been prego that i can smell things (especially things i can't have) much stronger than before. the hubs was drinking red wine on the couch the other night and i swear i could hardly concentrate on the show we were watching because the smell was so strong! it wasn't a bad smell to me, just really really potent! well, it only makes sense that my sniffer would be in overdrive in vegas then. our hotel smelled like smoke and mildew... but only to me! sweet hubs snuck into Urban Outfitters and got me 2 yummy travel candles for the room, which was so nice :) but, walking into the casino at our hotel was seriously enough to make you sick.

4. FOOD- my new thing is i need to eat every few hours. i can go up to 3 hours and be STARVING, and order my food, take 2 bites, and be absolutely stuffed. the hubs, on the other hand, eats like he's still an 18 year old quarterback. so, to meet in the middle we split something every 2 or 3 hours, which was actually a LOT of fun! we got to try out a TON of different fantastic places to eat. however, since i can't stand the sight of any kind of protein (it needs to be masked really well) for some reason, the hubs didn't quite get to eat his big steak. but i think he was okay! anyways, the food was good, but it is kinda hard to not be totally in control of what you are eating. i definately enjoyed not having to cook, but i know i didn't get near enough veggies, and probably had too much starch & sugar (this was all evident by my constipation!)

5. REST- vegas is great for running up and down the stip, exploring every square inch of the elaborate hotels, fabulously elite stores, (how many times to you get to finger a $6000 Gucci dress, or a 22 carat diamond ring?) however, i am tired! i am hungry! i am seriously high maintenance!!! all the walking actually did me good, i felt great most of the time. however, when you find yourself deep within the Venetian oogling that 22 carat diamond ring and the dizziness and nausea hits, and all you want to do is lay down in your dark room and sleep... you can't! you've got to either hoof it for the mile and a half in the 106 degree heat, or cram onto a noisy, public transportation bus for 45 minutes, then walk through the smelly casino, ride the barfy elevator, and then finally, FINALLY collapse onto a bed that not near as nice as the one you get to sleep on every night at home.

okay, so in a nutshell my trip wasn't ideal, laying on a beach someplace with no agenda would have been far better, but there were a lot of really amazing moments for the hubs and i. all the events i described above were pretty terrible, but also really memorable! even though i may have been frustrated or uncomfortable, the hubs was there for me in such fantastic ways. holding my hand, helping me breathe deeply, keeping me hydrated, bracing me as i shakily walked out of a bathroom, finding me good food, buying me scented candles for the smelly room... he was my protector! i am truly so excited to see him with this baby i'm carrying. he is going to be such a fantastic father.

i would love to post some pis, but unfortunately, my camera battery died on the way to the airport, so we didn't get to take a SINGLE picture!!!
