12-5-2009 - Venting...Drs appointment disappointment.

My mood while writing this blog: worried and a little disappointed

Ok so we went to our docs appointment, and it went well. For all you worried about big babies... she said 14 ounces was NOT too big. That im healthy and so is baby and that by no means proves im gonna have a big baby. Heard the heartbeat... YAY! <3 I also told her about my leg cramps... and she said its actually not potassium, its calcium and theres really nothing you can do except walk more and massage it when you get a cramp. Oh well. Then she said she will be away for June and that i will have to see a different doctor next time : ( I just got used to her damn it.... But then came the bad news, I said oh well no big deal as long as youre here in september... BAM! She was all "well you know i might not be the one to deliver you right? We all have shifts so whoever is at the hospital when youre in labor is who will deliver you." I was WHATTT??? How am i supposed to be comfortable with a stranger? If thats the case the practice should at least rotate the dr's you see so you can see all of them! I was so upset, how can they do that? I dont want a stranger just popping in and pulling my daughter out. I want to be comfortable with them and have already establish a relationship and repour with them.... Im so disappointed. I think im going to try and find out about the midwives at the practice and inquire about seeing them... id be more comfortable that way anyway. I want to know who the person is who will be delivering my baby... not just have them walk in while im in stirrups ready to push and be like hi im dr blah blah.... lol. I want someone who knows me. And i looked up the doctor ill be seeing for my june appointment and she looks so creepy! *sigh* But i wont whine and complain anymore... sorry bout that guys. On the bright side i bought some shirts online... i got one that says i <3 my baby bump, one that says im not fat im pregnant(and fat), one that says future daddys girl with an arrow pointing to my bump, and i got one for omar thats sooo funnyy... it says "not a beer gut, my wife is pregnant and this is my sympathy belly" LOL!! They come on thursday, im excited for that and ill post pics! The website is cafepress.com. cya ladies thanks for letting me vent : )

By the way, I looooved my nurses in labor and delivery...they were a god send...and thats what everyone has said that i've talked to...they loove their nurses.

Hey I was just readin through your blogs...and in my experience the dr was only there to "catch the baby", basically. And at that point in your labor you won't care who the heck is in the room, modesty is gone..it's very strange...legs open and all, all you want is that baby out. I had a dr with a small practice, and a fast labor...they called the dr and had to get me to stop pushing to wait for him to get there, I pushed one more time and she was out, I delivered the placenta, he checked to make sure to see if i needed any stitches (no, thank goodness) and left. He was in there for a max of 20 minutes. Good luck m'dear..you'll do wonderfully...just stay active up until the point htat you deliver, that's what I did ....and i pushed 4 times and she was out.

You know, in hindsight, it wasn't a big deal. The big deal to me was that our nurse stayed with us from hour 3 until the end. That was SO much more important. The doc only comes to "rescue" you from the "emergency of birth" at the end. You CAN and should talk to your doc about this. If you're still concerned, you can ask to have the delivery docs come in when you're in triage, just to meet/greet while you've still got your wits about you. AND, honey, don't put your feet in ANY stirrups unless YOU want to do it! Our hospital never even offered to use them. Auggie was delivered with me half-on my side, the doctor on the bed betwixt my legs. I really wish Shawn would've been the one to "deliver" and some hospitals will "let" you do that (if you want to be pushy about this, you can actually tell the doctor that they're not allowed to touch you- they have to abide by patients' wishes to deny treatment... our birth plan stressed that we see birth as natural and not an emergency, and we'd like our son's right as an emerging human BEING to be respected). We did have a doula, whom I loved before hand, but I MAJOR bonded w/ my nurse; and my doula was professional enough to recognize this and foster our relationship. That said, SHE got SHAWN through the delivery.

I totally feel you on the delivering dr topic! I am having the same issue. I didn't pick my dr b/c his ad in the paper was cute. It was b/c I felt comfortable with HIM, not every on call dr at the hospital! After thinking about it I might not need a dr, just someone to babysit my husband while I deliver my own baby! Everybody else is on my last nerve, the dr might even be too who knows! :) good luck have a good week.

I have a few T-shirts from cafepress as well....one that says..."this is what happens when you party naked!" LMAO!
ANyways about the doctor thing...I know it sucks...in my city, there is just like a big group of doctors who deliver babies, and you see whichever one is on when you go for appts and you never knwo which one will deliver your baby...:s kinda blows!

I'm sorry your appointment didn't go as planned. The first question I asked my OB was if she was going to be the one to deliver my baby for sure and she said no it could be her if she's on call or it will be another women Dr who is apart of her practice. She says now a days it's not practical/safe to have only one Dr that you see and that will also deliver your baby. She said after she's been on call at the hospital 24/7 3 days straight she needs a break she can barely drive home let alone deliver someone's baby so it's just not safe. I can see where she's coming from. I don't really care who delivers my baby as long as someone's there and it's a Dr.(a Dr that your very own Dr has trust in and works with) god bless them and get this baby out of me when the time comes! Haha
