20-7-2009 - Nearly 32 Weeks Excited and HappyMy mood while writing this blog:
Excited and Happy

Hi everyone

How was everyone's weekend?

Well, tomorrow I am 32 weeks pregnant, again the last week has just disappeared without me even noticing it!

I couldn't wait until tomorrow to blog so I thought I'd do it today.

I have spent today and last Friday starting to wash baby Hudson's bits and bobs, I did all the towels on Friday and today I've done 3 loads of blankets and bedding, I am loving it. Tomorrow if the weather is still ok I will be doing all the clothes, hats, bibs, etc and then I'll start ironing it all and putting it back.

Once all of the above is done I am going to start packing my hospital bag. I can't wait to get that done so then I can properly relax and know that if anything happens I am ready and raring to go!

I have my work leaving do meal on Friday night, I'm looking forward to it now, it will be nice to see everyone one last time before baby Hudson arrives.

On Saturday me and Steve are booked in for a breastfeeding class so I'm looking forward to that as well. I'm sure Steve won't find it that interesting but he wants to come with me and next week we have a 4 hour parentcraft class. I've heard it's not very good but we're still going to go and see what it's like, plus we'll get to have another look around the maternity home (even though I've seen it numerous times when visiting people), it will just make me even more excited to think I will be back there in a few weeks giving birth.

This weekend we didn't get up to much, I haven't got a great deal of energy at the minute so we just spent the weekend visiting family and friends and eating nice food and watching tele.

I am starting to get a bit miserable about putting weight on, I know I haven't exactly gained loads of weight for being 32 weeks pregnant (about 18 lbs so far) but I am a short person (5ft 4) and when I see pictures of myself now I don't like it. I don't mind my belly getting big, I love having a baby belly but I'm noticing the weight creep on elsewhere and I don't look nice, my face is getting really fat and I've got 8 more weeks to go yet! I know I shouldn't moan and it's all part of pregnancy but I need to stop pigging out as much I am doing. I take Jack for 1 or 2 walks every day so I am still exercising but I need to cut out the junk. I don't want to struggle to lose my baby weight after the birth.

For those of you who have breastfed can you please leave me a message about how you got on, for example, did you breastfeed exclusively or did you express so your partner could do some feeds or did you breastfeed in the day and use formula at night etc etc. I am planning to breastfeed but I just want to know all about it, any advise would be great thank you ladies!

With bf sometimes baby decides things. My lo is not fond of bottles so she mostly just nurses. My others took both but did not nurse as well. That may have also been my fault. Nursing is very painful and hard the first few wks. Get help form lactation consultant. After 4 to 6 wks everything seems to get better and you can really start to enjoy it. Some people are blessed to not have issues from the begining but if you do it does get better. And if you have to use formula that's fine too love is most important.

I breast fed Charlie exclusively till he was about 7weeks old. I found that at first it was easy having it so readily available but then as we started going out more i found it hard 2 find places in town for example where i could feed him. I found that nipple cream (lanisol i think, in a purple tube) helped with feeding, i got really sore. I also had my health visitor telling me that he wasnt putting weight on so i deceided to give him formula during the day and if he wanted a night feed and the first morning feed i would breast feed him. He eventually started sleeping through at night and my milk dried up so he was just having formula then. i did try 2 express but i just wasnt producing enough. At first i felt bad cos ev1one was telling me how much better breast feeding is and the fact that i wasnt filling him or producing enough but then i realised that it had 2 change and it wasnt a bad thing. Sometimes i think there is a lot of pressure 2 breast feed. But do what is right for you and for ur little one. x x x

breastfeeding is wonderful.... and it will help you lose your weight. I lost all of my weight with Carter in only 7 weeks! And... I had breastfeeding to thank because I certainly wasn't finding time to go to the gym. You'll be okay. Just stay confident and don't allow formula to be an option. Breastfeeding is the best possible thing you can do for baby hudson.... and it's sooooooo rewarding & special, particularly when he or she notices you and recognizes that you hold the milk. Carter & I have such a special bond because I am able to feed him like no one else can. He loves to snuggle up next to mama & nurse. In the beginning... for the first month, I breastfed exclusively & pumped milk to save in the freezer as a way to also boost my milk supply. I started to experience some engorgement however because I was producing WAY too much milk so I stopped pumping and allowed Zach to feed Carter with some of the frozen milk at night before bedtime.... that way nursing didn't become a requirement for Carter to get to sleep. Anyway.... it's been incredible, the whole experience has been incredible. Carter only gets breastmilk, even now at 5 months.... and he's a very healthy baby. I plan to breastfeed him until he's a year old and then I'll begin the weaning process if he's okay with that. I've read & heard from several pediatricians that weaning must be agreed upon by baby & mama to be a healthy & successful transition. :) Good luck Miss Helen! I always get on here to see how you're carrying on. I'm so thrilled for you & Steve. Bless you! Stay confident about breastfeeding.... it's amazing & worth every bit of those sore nipples at the beginning. You'll love & adore that baby so much that any bit of pain won't bother you a bit!

I know we aren't on each others friends list but I've been following your story all along. I love reading your blogs - very cute. As far as b-feeding....I did both - breastfed and also pumped so DH could feed our son. It's good to get them used to both bottle and boob...as eventually, the bottle will be all that they will have...unless you plan on b-feeding longer. That is our plan this time around too!

girl you'll do fine with losing the weight. i gained 18lbs and lost 16 of it by the time i left the hospital. I'm a little below (or was) my prepregnancy weight but my belly is horrible. my belly was so stretched out the skin is saggy. im not sure what i can do for it though!! just start eating healthy these last few weeks and im sure youll be great! xoxo

Breastfeeding is not hard, it is a little painful at first. Just make sure the baby latches on correctly it will cut down on the pain. And by all means, express and let Steve get in on the action. It's best to express right after baby is done until you get enough for baby. Then make sure you express while he's feeding the baby. The more you express, the more you will produce. Good luck hun!!!!

i would deffinately advise on both. breast and pump. i had to supliment with formula occasionally becuase of eloises sugar levels. If your gonig to pump i would strongly advise investing in an electric pump. I had a manual and its okay, alot cheaper by far, but took up alot of time considering eloise only fed for 5 10mins 3/4 times an hour. tiring i know lol. Its just like labour really, you go with the flow its different for everyone.

I exclusivley breastfed my son for 6 months..then breastfed and fed him real food until he was 18months old..Your supposed to not pump your milk or give baby a bottle for the first few months if you want to exclusivly breastfeed them because they will get nipple confusion..that is why so many women give up breastfeeding because babies are lazy..and it's much easier for them to get milk out a bottle than it is for them to get it out your boob..I would never give my baby formular..because I know that breastmilk is the best for them..it gives them all the anti-bodies and reduces the risk of them developing seriouse illnesses and diabeties..it also helps the mother to be less likely to get cancer..and gets your figure back too..I love breastfeeding..it is a little frustraiting to start with..but once you get them latched on propperly..(could take a couple of weeks..but don't give up)..it's just so rewarding..i'm so proud of myself that I BF till my son was 18 months old..and it's so much easier at night and when you go out anywhere..you don't need to pack bottles or sterilizers or make sure you heat it to the right temperature and your not keeping baby waiting...when baby is hungry..just pop them on..when there full or asleep..take them off again..lol..and it's a great way to bond with your baby..if you like steve can sit with you while you breastfeed too..and give you both cuddles..and burp them after..take care hun..and good luck...Xx

Neither of my boys latched so it made BF very hard I pumped for both boys.....It is very hard to BF exclusivley I found so pumping everynow and then helps so DH can do a feed maybe while mommy rests! Good luck

For the first 2 days I didn't get my milk so I fed my baby formula. I was so stressed out about not getting my milk. I bought the medela beast pump ( the double one) I breastfeed but only pump. I still try to but the baby to the boob lol And he takes it but I am paranoid on how much food he is getting. So I like to pump. Plus it's quicker, but I love the bonding you get while you put him to the bb.

I wouldn't worry about the weight too much. I am only 5' 3" so I know about being short and putting on weight. I gained about 30 pounds or so and it's all gone now. Your face, hands and feet may start to look swollen, but not to worry, that will all go away after your baby gets here! As far as breastfeeding goes, I pumped some as well mainly to help with keeping my milk coming in good. Clinton would fall asleep every time I put a boob in his mouth, LOL!! Breastfeeding is great it hurts a little at first while getting used to it, but it is such a great bonding experience with your baby. And it helps with losing your weight too. Get some rest now and just enjoy these last few weeks of being pregnant, it goes by so quick!! That baby will be here before you know it!

much the same as others it is really hard at first but sooooo worth it! I personally found it very painful and often cried whilst feeding George in the beginning! My right nipple got so sore that i started to express out of it and give that feed to him from a bottle (think it was about 5 weeks in). I got nipple cream on prescription from the doctor whic helped as once it cleared up i carried on breast feeding form both. I Expressed regularly as well and froze it the started giving him milk from a bottle and boob at about 3 months. I found this great as it gave me a break so Adam could do some night feeds and also meant he could go and stay teh night at grandparents houses! The BEST nipple cream i found was called lansolil or something, it's in a purple tube and you can get it in mothercare. It's very expensive but worth every penny as it acts like a guard. I tried the nipple shields but George couldn't suck the milk through them. It would have been so easy to give up because it is painful, stressful and you are just so tired but once you get the hang of it, it becomes easy, you just whip it out, stick it in and away you go! No bottles, sterelising , powder etc. I gave George breast milk exclusivly for 6 months, then started to introduce formula at night at 6 months to try and fill him up before bed (didn't work)! lol! he went onto formula completely at 8 months when i went back to work. I hope to do it for longer next time but it was just easier to give up because of back ache etc. As long as you really really want to do it you will manage i'm sure. You can mail me anytime for advice if you need it x

Breastfeeding, oh goodness!

Your nipples will more than likely feel like they are gonna fall off within the first week. But it's completely normal, they gotta toughen up. But after mine got tough, it's smooth sailing. I thought about quitting so many times cause it hurt so bad during those times, but it's what is best for her.. so I continued and it got better. 100 times better! So stick with it, if it hurts.. it wont hurt forever :D

As for how often do I breastfeed, she does not ever get a bottle.. and I don't pump either. I'm not working.. so she's always attached to the boobie! :D & my husband understands that it's best for her. Some babies get confused between the nipple and the bottle whenever you're using both and end up not wanting the nipple because the bottle is easier to suck from. So, be careful doing that if you go that route.

I may start working a few hours for a few days a week, but it's right up the street.. and my husband will watch her while I work. And the will allow him to bring her up there for me to feed her, and/or me to bring her to work.. so that is really helpful and less stressful on me since I don't want bottles in the picture.

Hope that helps, not much longer hun! :D

mmmm i wouldn't pinch your nipples like jen suggests.. it stimulates the production of oxytocin a hormone which can induce labour.. if you are going to pinch your nipples wait til after 37 weeks at least

Helen, It's hard to believe that your at week 32!!! It just seems like yesterday that you got the news that you were pregnant!!! Times sure does go by fast. Here I sit, with my little 3 1/2 months old....he is getting so big so fast!!!! They are amazing!!! I can't put into words how much joy they bring to your lives!!!! You and Steve are going to have sooooo much fun!!!!!

Breastfeeding for me is FINALLY going great!!!! I'm not going to sugar coat anything....at first it was probably the biggest struggle I found with becoming a mommy....I could handle the crying, the late nights, the poop, not sleeping, but when my nipples started cracking, bleeding and he was losing weight, it was terrible!!!!!! BUT....we stuck with it(even though it was painful) and eventually things healed up and Garrett began to gain his weight back. I was pumping after each feeding for a month or so just to increase my milk supply. Now he is eating like a champ. He gets a bottle(with my breastmilk) 2 times a day since I'm back to work. I'm lucky enough to work close to home so at lunch I go home and nurse him(Daddy is home with him during the summer, but starting in late August he'll be going to daycare part time...which I'm dreading, but that is just the way things have to be for now). I'm hoping to continue to nurse him on my lunch hour since the daycare is close to work as well.

Ok, I've babbled on long enough....good luck with things....your due date is getting close!!!!! Let me know if you ever have any questions!!! I'll be thinking about you guys as time gets closer for you guys to meet your little blessing!!!!!!

Take Care!

FORGOT!!! Start this now and you will be happy you did:

Toughen up your nipples!!!! Just whenever you can, whenever your sitting around watching a show, pinch and pull on them to toughen them up! Be aggressive at times, as they will see use like they have never seen before and to avoid the initial pain of all the wear and tear, ease into it by doing it now yourself. This had to be the best thing I could have ever done...it looks funny and all, but soooooo worth it. I would be sitting on our couch doing it and Chris would walk in and say "toughening up your nipples again?" and I would say, "yup!" and just keep at it!!!!

Breastfeeding is wonderful for a lot of moms, and agony for others. I enjoyed it immensely and will do it with my next one, but I know of a couple people that wanted too and either couldn't or stopped because they said it hurt too much. The only time I was sore was when my breasts were full and that was immediately relieved after feeding, although I could have choked Cody sometimes!! I didn't have issues early on, since Cody was 4 weeks early, I wasn't quite ready to start feeding when he was born, but my milk soon came in (about 4 days later) and he was always supplemented with formula as my supply didn't meet his needs. I probably could have done more looking back on everything, such as pumped in between feedings, to increase my supply, but he got what he needed from me, and with him being supplemented with formula, my husband and other family members were able to feed him too. One thing that I learned outside of my breastfeeding class, was to make sure baby's mouth is open VERY wide to take in as much of the nipple as possible when you do the latch, otherwise, it can tend to be painful. You'll know when the latch isn't correct, and at that point, you just pop the boob out and try again. Sometimes it takes a few tries to get a good latch, but then it's smooth sailing from there. Also, when you shower, don't directly wash your nipples either, as they will tend to dry out anyway, and adding soap to them will increase the dryness. And when you are done feeding, express a bit more milk out, just enough to rub over your nipples, and this will be better to use then any other nipple cream out there...or at least that was my experience! Good luck with it Helen, I think it's a wonderful choice to do this for your baby!!

Aww its lovely and soo exciting getting all the clothes and things done isn't it? Sounds like your having a great time!
Well my experience with breastfeeding wasn't soo good, I wanted to do it soo bad and i was committed to giving it a good go! And i did as soon as he was born they as if i wanted to give him a feed and i could do the skin to skin at the same time and i was so excited to try, So he latched really well even the midwife said he was a natural i was really pleased as my sister wanted to do it a year before me when she had Archie but he wouldn't latch at all sadly, But straight away it felt sore and uncomfortable but i persisted as i wanted this for him, And every feed it would hurt initially and it would die off after a while but it really hurt when he would jump and rip his little mouth off as your meant to ease them off and im sure thats why i go so sore as he yanked hiself off alot! Then he slept most of the day then woke about midnight and fed until 6 am on and off i was knackered i'd put him back in the cot for about 10 mins and he'd want more! SO it went like that for a couple of days and as much as i liked doing ti for him my nipples never had much rest and therfore got sooo sore! i even buzzed the nurse in the night to please let him have a bottle as i was soo tired and she said no he will get confused thats ruubish thou because when i did both when he was 3 weeks old he did great! I do rmemeber day 3 however when the milk come in as its colostrum at first the best stuff! And boy it was painful all the time the whole breast it was engorgement and they was gigantic!! and he couldn't latch then as he could nustle into them the midwifes tried to help and borrowed me an eletric pump as the manual one wasn't good enough at first just to shift all the extra milk that i'd made, and that was magic so much better but you have to massage the milk down also as it felt like lumpy veins in them as they was blocked the ducts thats where the pain comes from, But i have stopped now as every feed i was feeling upset as id start off ok then he would be on an hour and they got sore again and all night then i couldn't catch them at all as i would cry as they were soo flipping sore but i fed him for 3 weeks and they say if you give them the colostrum which is in the first 3 days or so you have given them the best stuff anyway and you must do whats best for you aswell as babies don't mind the bottle at all as long as they eat lol! And Danny's much less stressed i think towards the end he was having a fit trying to get enough out as it was subsiding and i couldn't give him 5oz what he's on now so were much happier now i don't regret it don't get me wrong i did like having that experience with him as your soo close but its nice to get dad to help out and you can have a rest its nice for him too! As its alot to do 6 feeds a day or more on your own and pumpings good but if your doing that inbetween feeds you'll always have ur bb's out and you won't find time for anything else as i found and having to put it all away quick sharp when visitors come oh the joys! hehe! All the best anyway you should try i think if you want to you may take to it really well but if you don't if you only do it for a few days then you've done good in my opinion! love steph x x x

with regards to breastfeeding.. first the breastfeeding class is really informative i highly recommend it.

i've been breastfeeding for 20 weeks now - no formula at all. i've been giving my daughter a jar of hipp organic baby rice once a day since 15 1/2 weeks they recommend no solids til 17 weeks but she showed all the signs of wanting to wean and i was determined not to give her formula to supplement. i pump in lieu of her solid feed now to keep my supply up.

as far as breast pumps go i had a tommee tippee manual pump and it really hurt my wrists to use it.. holding a baby on one boob and pumping on the other was so painful on my wrists :( - it's a lot easier to pump on one boob whilst feeding on the other as letdown happens much more efficiently whilst feeding. I now have an avent electric pump.. it's a bit pricey but totally worth it. with the manual pump i could only get 2oz in 20 mins with the avent i get 4 - 5 oz in around 5 mins. i now have a good supply in the freezer so i know i can leave her with her dad or my parents if i need to.

I wouldn't recommend nipple creams or anything like that because you have to let your nipples toughen up.. creams kinda slow that down.. so although it can be a little brutal at first i'd try and grin and bare it at the beginning.. they say it should be 100% comfortable.. but at the end of the day there is still a little vacuum attached to your heavily engorged boob so don't worry if it is not 100% comfortable for the first few weeks!!

i do have to say though.. they tend to over-complicate how baby should latch on.. wide mouth etc.. my daughter has NEVER got most of my areola in her mouth but she is well fed lol. you'll find what is comfortable for you both.

i do recommend building up a good supply of milk in the freezer after 3 weeks and introducing a bottle to your baby after the first few weeks, I know you won't envisage leaving your baby that soon but it is important to know that if you HAVE to you can.. knowing they can be fed without you really saves worry.. plus when they get to a few months old having a night off is VERY appealing. I love my daughter deeply but breastfeeding means being the only one on call 24/7 day and night.

in the long run though it is very fullfilling and i recommend sticking with it, through the good and the bad.

oh, last note, you really have to not be embarrassed about feeding in public.. I've faced no criticism or funny looks whatsoever so don't be frightened to do it like some mothers seem to be.. if you breastfeed it is "on demand" in order to keep a good supply there is no regime for it. I don't mean you should be a hippy mother throwing your boobs about all over lol but be prepared to do it in public, after the first few times it is easy. My husband and I often eat in da vincis at lunch time.. they are very accomodating with babies and i have fed in there numerous times in a quiet corner table and no one has ever even noticed. so my biggest piece of advice is DON'T BE SHY! plus it is illegal for anyone to attempt to prohibit you whilst your baby is under 6 months old.. so the law is on your side..

SORRY FOR THE RAMBLE.. AGAIN lol, i've just written all this whilst feeding too, so that proves it gets easier!
