26-4-2009 - Choking Scare Freaked outMy mood while writing this blog:
Freaked out

So yesterday we took our 2 year old son to a birthday party and he got some candy from the pinata. My son then eats this chewy sweet tart type candy about the size of a dime (mind you he is no stranger to candy or food)...so I'm talking to DH and I look at my son who has this blank stare on his face and I'm thinking that's weird maybe he is dazing or something. So I call his name and ask if he is okay. He doesn't even look at me or acknowledge me but I notice his face is kinda red and his eyes are watering. So I told DH that I think he is choking. So DH gets in his face and is trying to get a reaction out of him and he doesn't get any sound or movement out of him so he starts pounding his back but nothing. I'm frozen at this point and internally freaking out about what to do, so I think of my mom who always finger sweeps his mouth if he gags on something. During all this brainstorming he is just beet red in his face and still not moving or talking or coughing. So I do the finger sweep and he immediately starts gagging and making noises which is a good sign because now he is getting air to his lungs but he still looks like he is struggling. So I'm pounding his back and then he just throws up. Yuck but he did it. He got the candy out...It had to be one of the scariest things I have been through so far with him (and I know it won't be the last). So now I'm signing up me, dh, and my grandma (who watches him twice a week) for CPR/lifesaving class and I urge everyone who hasn't taken one or hasn't thought to take one to please take one. I have taken them in the past but when you are in the heat of the moment it's better to have it fresh in your mind on what to do. Also please make sure your sitter is infant/child/adult CPR certified, I don't know what I would have done if this happened and I wasn't there and nobody could have helped him...thanx for listening ladies!

Wow! That's good he's ok now. I need to take another CPR class. I got certified 8 years ago (high school requirement), but I don't remember that stuff now.

This has happened to my son last summer...he was eating chicken and it got stuck...Mind you he was 4 almost 5 yrs old. I was scared to death...he was blue!! I did the finger sweep also. My daughter recently choked on a hot dog because her cousin pushed her from behind while she was eating...and we poudned on her back and the finger sweep which helped alot....PHEW! its a scary thing when it happens. Im glad your son is OK....it frightens them more when we are in shock. and that can make it worse. My son said I scared him more which made him have anxioty and he was turning blue...so being calm is the best thing.

CPR and first aid would be a great thing for us to have in the birthing classes, don't you think? I had a friend once who's daughter was chocking in the back of the car and she had to pull over to help her. She said it was the scaryest thing she had ever done! She said nobody would pull over and help her either, it was all on her to figure it out. Luckily she did and her daughter is ok, but you just never know. I am so thankful that your baby is ok! I think it's a great idea for all of you to take the classes and more people should.

Thats scarry. Im glad hes ok. You never know when something like that is going to happen. There are so many "What if's" that are probaly going threw your mind. It will probaly haunt you for a while. It seems like when something scary like that happens it keeps repeating itself over and over in your mind. I had someting scary happen to my little girl 4 years ago and It sometimes still freeks me out. We could all use a CPR class. There is no excuse why any mother shouldnt know it. Mothers are heros in many ways.
