19-5-2009 - Breastfeeding.......

My mood while writing this blog:
concerned

I breastfed both of my previous children up until about they became about year and a half. But I am having difficulties with this time around. Lily loves to breastfeed, but she has the worst gas and indegestion I've ever had to deal with. I feel like I've cut out everything from my diet, it really could not be more bland, but she STILL has a hard time. Can babies have lactose problems from their mothers' milk? Should I try soy formula and see if that works for her? It's a little upsetting because I like breastfeeding, and if it's my milk that is bothering her then I can't pump either. I feel like our bonding will decrease or something, or that she won't be as healthy as my other kids. I KNOW this has to be silly, because bottle fed babies are just as healthy, I'm just feeling inadequate I suppose. So any input on the subject would be greatly appreciated!! When I drink milk - mine spits up and burps more.. It is hard to take dairy out of my diet though... How are you these days? We have had a hard week...

have you tried pumping a bottle and giving it to her..to make sure its the milk?

sometimes how it gets ingested affects how its processed in baby.

anywho, I notice this blog is old now...so I hope the issue is resolved & all better. :)

I agree with most of the other posters...just kind of wait it out. Max was very very fussy until he was about 3.5 months old...then it disappeared as suddenly as it came! He would go into screaming fits every evening that lasted about an hour...he was inconsolable...unless you put him to the breast. He passed gas constantly and always seemed uncomfortable. I would not give up breastfeeding yet--it IS the best way to go and I'm sure she will grow out of it! Good luck! (Try Mylicon drops maybe...we used those once in awhile and it seemed to help somewhat).

That sounds greatly similar to my daughter. The ped said that it was colic I was dealing with and I was lucky to be breastfeeding or it would be really, really bad. I kinda refused to believe that she was colicy...but looking back now, they were right. She would constantly eat like any other newborn, but would cry alot... and it was amplified in the evenings. Changing my diet did nothing. She still cried and spit up constantly. I tried the gripe water and it did nothing, gas drops did nothing. The only way to soothe her was to put her to the breast which was exhausting or put her in her swing. Around 10 weeks of age...things just got better suddenly it seemed. Just hang in there...you know the benefits and close connection breastfeeding can bring. Soon she will be looking up at you with a big grin and milk dripping from her mouth.

i had the same problem when Molly was little. But she also spit up or threw up alot. I tried changing my diet and didn't notice a change in her. It eventually just went away. She grew out of it. i tried giving her soy formula but she wouldn't take it and she still wont' take a bottle of anything. Not even breast milk. She is picky! I'm sure she will grow out of it soon. The first few months are hard. There is always something......
Did you try the gas drops? Or a warm towel on her belly? I heard that helps. Don't give up! Good luck!

have you tried looking this up on kellymom.com?? whenever i have breastfeeding issues i go to that site - i'm addicted but it always answers my questions, even when my doctors can't! i hope things get better for her, poor thing. my guess would have been to eliminate all dairy from your diet - however, if you've already done most of that, then i don't know. i'm sorry i can't be much help --- but definately check www.kellymom.com !!
