19-6-2009 - breastfeeding blues

My mood while writing this blog:
failure

I feel like a big breastfeeding loser right now. I had written before about how I was supplementing because I felt like Lily had a problem with dairy. Well it had gotten to the point where even if I nursed her every single hour, she would scream as if she was starving. Give her a bottle, she would be happy as a lamb. Well I still haven't given up nursing, before every bottle, I will nurse until she gets frustrated. Why is my milk flow so awful with this baby??!! I can feel my milk let down but nothing even leaks! It's like when Lily was first born, I had a lot of milk, because it hadn't been that long since I nursed Baylee. But after a couple of days it just got less and less, my boobs don't even get hard like they did with my other babies if I didn't nurse for a whole day. I can go a whole day, and nothing, they are just as lifeless as ever. Could milk supply be affected by stress? or fatigue? I do not have the time to pump 15 times a day just to get 2 ounces!! I'm so upset right now, I really feel like I have failed my baby :( What do I do?!

Sorry your having trouble! I would call your local nursing center. I know we have a 24 hour line that you can call and talk to someone. I visited the center once for latching issues and they were very helpful.
I hope it all works out for you and Lily! Don't give up yet!

I would try to find a La leache league leader to talk to or maybe a lactation consultant. They can give you much more info that you'll find on here :D

I think I may have mentioned the domperidone to you before. I'm ordering another batch for myself today as we speak! I had a couple of overnight trips away from my son and it made my supply decrease immensly even though i still pumped. I've always had it increase my supply within 2-3 days of starting it. Someone else mentioned fenugreek--it works for a lot of people, but not me :( It's worth a shot also--you can get it at any health food place and start it immediately. It also supposedly works better when used with blessed thistle. I tried everything before the domperidone...it was all that worked for me. the website for it is www.inhousepharmacy.com and it's called motilium on there. Good luck with whatever you decide. You're amazing for making it this far and striving to give your little one the best! Hang in there :)

with my daughter he gave me a pill that helps you produce more milk. It worked good.

I went through the same thing but with all 3 of my children, unfortunately mine was attributed to a lack of milk supply... and absolutely can be caused by stress or just simply hormonal factors, etc... but no doubt stay hydrated and pump every few hours if you can to get your supply back up.. atleast these were things that I was told to do from my lactation nurse! Lots of luck and I totally understand!

You should be commended for your efforts! I had about the same problem with my daughter, and I miss nursing her IMMENSLY, especially since I am now fixed and she was my last baby! She LOVED nursing too. There is a herb that helped A LOT.. It's called Fenugreek. You can buy it at just about any health food store... here is a little info on it:

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) appears to be the herb that is most often used to increase milk supply. It is an excellent galactagogue, and has been used as such for centuries. In one study of ten women, "the use of fenugreek significantly increased volume of breastmilk" [Swafford 2000].

Mothers generally notice an increase in production 24-72 hours after starting the herb, but it can take two weeks for others to see a change.

Yes - being tired and stressed both make your supply go down..
No need to worry though. Just pump after nursing or when you can at least every 2-3 hours. this will help you get stimulated to increase supply. Even if you pump nothing - it puts in the order and within a week or so it will be there!
