17-6-2009 - How much to pay for a babysitter?

Okay, so my best friend is going to watch the baby once I have to go back to work. She has a 1 year old that she is home with during the day and then works a few hours an evening as a massage theripist. She is going to have her 3 days a week for about 10 hours a day. She will get her at 7/7:30 somewhere through there and I will pick her up around 4:30. I know somedays she will have to be at work at 3:30 so my mom will pick the baby up early for me on those occasions. I am just trying to figure out what other people are paying.

My daughter goes to a top daycare center where i live i pay 186 a week for her to be there 40hrs (mon-Fri) a week even though some times shes not there 40 hrs (shes 18mo) and one of my friends that i work with is opening an in home daycare and when i have the baby shes going to charge me 115 a week for the baby for 40 hrs. (mon-fri) but since we are friends she might be watching the baby some nights (shes thinking about doing 2nd shift) since i do work in retail..

I think $7/hour is a minumum. Where I live $7/hour is slightly under minimum wage. Taking care of a little baby is probably one of the most difficult jobs at times especially with a toddler around too.

I think $8-10 is more reasonable since it's a really important job to you.

i paid 100.00 for my son as a newborn but i think that is really reasonable and he was there for 5 days. for 3 days i would say 60.00- 75.00 dollars, thats 20-25 dollars a day

My MIL keeps children 5 days a week in her home. She provides everything but formula or diapers. (food, baby food, cereal, etc) She keeps them from about 7 to 4:30. She only charges 100 but she is going up this year. You can look at is as one set price or by the hour. Say she keeps your baby 3 days for 10 hours each day @ $8 per hour. You will be looking at $240. I think that is a little pricy though considering that is how much it is for a whole week at some of the top childcare centers. Hope this helps!
