08-1-2009 - Timothys first metabolic crisis

My mood while writing this blog: ok now

Timothy had his first metabolic crisis tuesday. Let me explain...timmy has a metabolic disorder called mcadd. his body cannot break down certain fats into energy. his body will rely on protein and glucose. With this disorder it is extremely important he eats well and often. Well tuesday timmy started throwing up. i suppose it would have been monday night. he was crying and nothing could console him. what he didnt throw up he would only eat a tiny bit and was acting in pain. so i took him to the hospital for a glucose drip. i am at my mom's currently because DH is in florida on business. my mom had left to go across state because my cousin recently passed away. i loaded up baby and went to the hospital close by. i get there and have to explain what MCADD is and why its important for him to get the IV and all he needs is the IV. the ER doctor was so confused its sad. she ended up calling little rock arkansas and columbia missouri who has specialists in the field. then they come in the room and say we are taking him to columbia. we cannot treat this disorder here. i was like how hard is it to start a glucose IV and monitor blood sugar? then they come in and say no we are taking him to little rock. then it was traveling by air then by land....finally it was by land to columbia. it just so happens that the doctor there is timothy's metabolic doctor anyway. so we travel about 6 hours. get to the hospital and timmy's blood sugar had gone from 110 to 60 in about 15 minutes. they got the iv started and all of a sudden timmy was better.

they did all kinds of blood work and everything. to find the cause of the vominting. it doesnt do any good to get his sugar back up if he isnt going to be able to eat. well long story short timmy cured himself lol. he coughed up a large amount of mucus. he had been congested for about a month now. who knew a little congestion could lead to all that.

we had to stay the night in the hospital but we are home now. timmy is doing well except for needing to poop. they had him on way too much Iron before so we finally convinced the doctor it was making him not poop. now we should be able to let the little man release.

dh felt really bad about not being here when i had to take timmy in to the hospital. but that is life. and he needs his job he carries the insurance lol.

What a nightmare for you. Thank goodness he is o.k...but it is scary when drs don't know what they are doing isn't it!
