My mood while writing this blog: Ok |
How come my insurance sucks ass? Apparently I have a $2,000 deductible. My pregnancy is labeled high risk so every time I look up, the doctor is poking me with a needle or asking for a pee sample. I go to the hosptial for special ultrasounds and x-rays. All this resulted in me being billed $1,300 from the hospital and lab. This might have been okay until I discovered that my deductible starts over next month which means I will likely pay it twice in one year. Maybe even three times because apparently when I add the baby to the insurance, my deductible jumps from $2,000 to $4,000.
On top of this, my OBGYN tells me that I need to pay her upfront for my prenatal visits. She put me on a payment plan to ensure that I will meet my $2,000 deductible before my delivery date. Since I only have 5 months to pay, she expects me to pay damn near $400 a month. Thing is, how can you bill me for a service you haven't even provided yet....turns out it's called "global billing" and apprently a lot of OBGYN's use it. It's a way for them to ensure payment because some women give birth then never pay the doctor for thier delivery. So now I must pay $400 a month to OBGYN while also trying to pay off my current $1,300 bill from the hospital. I tried to get assistance but I don't qualify for many of the programs because I allegedly make too much money. Ugh, by the time I finish paying for all my prenatal care, there will be no money left to buy baby supplies. (Sigh), Universal healthcare would come in handy right about now.

Friday, 29 May Oh wow, thanks guys. I'm really going to look into the carryover deductible thing...that would be an enormous help maebeth -
Friday, 29 May That is sucky. Can you talk to the business office and explain the problem? Also, theres can a damn thing the hospital can do if you don't pay them exactly what they want (hospitals have to provide emergency services, but clinic isn't emergency so they get by with the payment thing). Offer to pay $20 a month and don't miss a payment. GET THE AGREEMENT IN WRITNG OR THEY MAY NOT REMEMBER THE AGREEMENT! As long as you get the agreement and follow it you're good. Try the same with the clinic and make doubly sure you don't miss an agreed payment. They may laugh in your face but ask for their boss and then their boss until you talk to your OBGYN or top person. If they are really jerky, you may have to move to another clinic. Good luck. I've been in your shoes (with my pregnancy with my daughter) and you have to bug enough until they give in. The golden rule is get an agreement you can handle in writing and DO NOT BREAK IT or they may deny future services. Let me know how it goes. God Bless. Julianna -
Friday, 29 May Check to see if you have Deductible carryover. What this means is if you meet your deductible in the last 3 months of your plan year, it carries over & shows as being met in the next plan year. Also....So many people are so quick to blame the insurance company...your employer chose your benefits based on the premiums they wanted to pay. If you don't want deductibles, then your monthly premiums increase. If you are adding your baby to the plan you have to do it within 30 days after birth or he/she won't be elligible klunkette -
Friday, 29 May Man, I hear your frustration, but Global health care is not the answer because you and I, would still have to pay a portion because we actually "make to much" believe me!!!! Anyway, I was dealing with the same sort of thing and found out that I only have a $1, 000.00, deduct. And I am pretty sure, because we don't have to sign the baby up until 30 days after he is born that he will be convered under my insurance for that time and therefore the hospital jazz will be under my deduct. Anyway, I hear and feel your pain. But look into it because it shouldn't be a $2,000.00 deduct. for every provider, meaning if you have a $1,300.00 bill from the hospital that only leaves $700.00 which would not be covered of the OB care, not even two payments at $400 a month. Watch out, my insurance wasn't covering things that they should have been because providers like to get paid in full, instead of the contracted insurance price if they can. *I work for a personal injury attorney and so, deal with sleezy insurance companies alllllllll the time!!!!!* mamalvs4 -
