09-6-2009 - Hand Me Downs OkMy mood while writing this blog:
Ok

When people find out you're pregnant, they automatically start to offer you their old baby clothing, furniture, decorations, etc. Most of the time they mean well and I appreciate the gesture but I don't want anybody's used baby stuff. This is my first baby and even though money will be tight, I want to buy my baby new stuff, I want them to have their "own" stuff.

Okay so my cousin offered to give me this rocking chair and foot stool. My mother insisted I take it. She said I need to be humble and grateful. So my cousin brings over the chair which she claimed was in good condition and still looked like new. The chair was okay but it was dirty and dusty. She said "Oh it was in the basement so you might have to clean it up a little but it's a good chair". I didn't know whether to say thank you or be offended. You have to know my cousin to understand why I would feel offended, she's the type who looks down on people. She was in the process of moving and only offered the chair because she found it in the basement and was going to throw it out. I wanted to tell her "I don't want this bullsh*t" but I just smiled and said thanks. Then she says, "O, I just gave away all my baby clothes otherwise I would have given you those too". I just stared at her and tried not to frown. How do you politely tell someone "Hey, I don't want your left over crap". I don't know, maybe I'm just ungrateful.

How do you guys feel about hand me downs?
Is there anybody else who prefers to buy their baby new stuff?

Hi. I understand when people give you stuff because they think they're better than you are. That really irritates me. On the other side of things, I'm quite irritated with my SIL. I was expected by her and MIL to give her all of my daughter's stuff when she was expecting a girl. Now I'm expecting a boy and she hasn't offered once to give me any of her son's old clothes, but keeps asking me for my daughter's clothes that she's outgrown. I think there has to be a happy medium. I have a close friend that gave me lots of clothes for my daughter when she was a baby, but she chose the nicest and least worn clothes to give me. I used them as everyday clothes and saved money to buy our daughter the nicer clothes for like church and special occastions. It saved me wonders and I was completely grateful. I think it depends on who is giving the clothes and why they're doing it (to be helpful or just dump their crap on you). Either way is ok and I don't think it's right to have to take stuff you don't want. Sorry that your family is putting that stress on you; it's really not fair to you.

I know exactly how u feel - I am expecting my 1st baby & it may sound selfish & snobby but I want her to have new stuff that I have chosen myself! I have been offered things by people & there are certain things I will take (baby bath & bottle steralizer) but clothes & bedding I want to buy myself - I don't think it's ungrateful just the joys of choosing for ur 1st baby!x

I would like some new stuff but I will take anything and then I decide what I will keep. We don't have a lot of money so I would love some stuff but no one has offered. When it comes to clothes just take it and go through it and be picky you can always make a trip to the trash, or donate it. Honestly there are so many people who can't afford stuff that I kinda feel bad. If you have the money to go brand new then go for it. Wish I could.
