14-6-2009 - Second Trimester Screening happyMy mood while writing this blog:
happy

I went to the doctor on Thursday. The baby has a good heart beat and appears to be growing healthy and strong. The doctor asked me if I wanted to have second trimester screening tests to test for down syndrome, trisomy and neurological defects. The doctor explained that the testing was optional as I was under the age of 35 and did not have a history of down syndrome or birth defects in my family. When I first became pregnant, I decided that I would opt out of all optional testing as I did not want to receive any distressing news. But after thinking about it, I decided to go ahead with the testing, not sure when I will get the results but I pray that all is well with my little one. I figure that if the tests come back negative, it will put my mind at ease and lesson my worries about the baby's health.

Please feel free to share your experiences or thoughts about prenatal screening tests....

Hi. I too have struggled with these tests. I had them with my daughter 3 1/2 years ago and she showed positive for spina bifita (only slightly elevated). We had some more tests done (ultrasounds to look at her spine) and they couldn't see anything wrong. She doesn't have spina bifita. With this pregnancy, I had the tests again and everything came back negative. I sometimes wonder if I showed positive with my daughter because I was so sick and didn't get the proper nutrition early on (I didn't take my prenatals very well or I threw them up). With my son, I took separate folic acid supplements that I was able to tolerate on top of the prenatal vitamin (which I still got sick from). I hope all goes well for you, but don't expect the test back anytime real soon. Only a few places in the USA do it and they have to ship it out to them. I was told at least a week sometimes closer to two weeks before I got my results. Good luck and I'm sure it'll be just fine. God Bless.

i had a lot of complications with my first pregnancy at 18/19yrs old. my fiance and i choose not to get any addtional testing done as long as our baby looked healthy on the Ultrasound. Everything look good, so we didn't get one done.

This pregnancy we were debating or not to get the first and second triemester screenings done. after a long talk, we decided once again, as long as everything look good on the Ultrasound, we will not do any additional testing. our family doesn't have a history of birth defects or downs. some people say we are taking a risk. but i know God will send me the child he sees best fit for us.

congrats on the pregnancy, i hope you have a healhty and safe one!!

To be honest I chickened out of doing the screening tests, I'm not sure why. My younger sister had them done with her baby and it all turned out fine. I think it's great that you had them done.
