15-9-2009 - GESTATIONAL DIABETES concernedMy mood while writing this blog:
concerned

Pregnancy is a wonderful yet very scary experience. With only nine weeks to go, I find myself worrying more than ever about my baby and potential things that could go wrong. The only thing that keeps me sane is the fact that I am reassured that she is okay because she moves daily. I have started bi weekly visits to doctor's too, which will hopefully give me a piece of mind. I'm ready for this process to be over already so I can have my little one and get on with my life. I want my body back.

Okay, on to the diabetes.... so I took my one hour glucose test and my levels came back elevated so my doctor ordered a three hour glucose screening. Well, the doctor called today with the results. As soon as I saw their number on the caller id, I knew there was a problem. And sure enough, Doc told me I have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes and arranged for me to meet with a nutritionist next week at the hospital. The news upset me very badly because diabetes can pose multiple health problems to me and the baby. However, the good news is that they have diagnosed it and with the advances of modern medicine, it can be easy to treat through diet, exercise and possibly insulin or meds if absolutely necessary. (Sigh)... I feel so badly. If I had known that all the fast food and ice cream was hurting my baby, I would have paid more attention to my diet.

Hi my name is Jo and i just wanted to know how you were going with your diabetes as i too have been diagnosed with and am struggling a little .. I have read your comments and everyone is saying they cut out carbs, i dont get it because my specialists have asked me to eat carbs but of the low GI. I think it is a frustrating time and i just want it to be over with soon .. What sort of diet do they have you on ? I would love to chat to you about it and maybe swap ideas with regards to meal planning .. Thank you Jo

Hi. I am sorry to hear that you have GD. It's not fun. I've had Type I diabetes since I was 9 years old. I've gone through two full pregnancies with it. Don't beat yourself up over what you ate. To be honest the food may not help, but it doesn't cause GD either. Your body simply is not using the insulin your body makes naturally as effectively as it needs to. There are many causes for it but the extra stress on the body during pregnancy is definitely a trigger. I know the amount of insulin I need during pregnancy sky rockets because of the strain on the body. Good news is GD goes away in over 90% of cases after delivery. Try your best to follow the doctor's advice but don't beat yourself up if you don't do it perfectly. Even if you do everything right you may still need insulin and it's not your fault. It means the body just needs a little help right now during all the stress of pregnancy. Good luck and I'll pray for you and baby. Take care.

YOu will be ok! I had it with my daughter and I cut out all carbs - these were the WORST culprits of GD!! I monitored my blood 4 times a day and had a good diet. In the end, I was induced 1 week early because of it. The dr was afraid the baby would be too big and I have a small pelvis - it was all good when all was said and done!!! I was able to maintain my weight gain during pregnancy and NEVER felt better to be honest!!! Good luck - as long as you follow your diet and monitor - you will NOT need insulin!!! xox
