18-12-2008 - Getting the Sweep

My mood while writing this blog: Looking forward to Tues.

Hello:) So, I went for my weekly checkup with the midwife today. Lots of good news. I tested negative for strep B, which is awesome because I really didn't want to expose the baby to antibiotics. His heartbeat is in the 120's, which means his nervous system is working well. And she said he facing the right direction for birth (head down, face towards butt). She also felt around my belly to see how big he is. According to her, he is about 6 1/2 lbs. She said he will not be a really big baby, phew! I didn't think he would be anyway as hubby and I are both quite lanky. :)

Then she offered to do strip my membranes next week to get things moving along! I didn't even know she did that, but am quite excited. I have heard the girls from the UK talking about sweeps and know it is quite common. I kind of wanted to do it, but didn't know if she had been taught or was allowed. So, yeah! It will be next Tuesday. Apparently, it can be quite painful. And there might be some bleeding after. But, she said, if your body is ready it will help bring on contractions within three days. If it doesn't happen by then she will try the following week.

For some reason I feel he will be born the day after Christmas, so that would be day three. Hubby and I have been taking a lot of intimate time, I'm taking primrose oil, and I'm drinking lots of raspberry tea. So, hopefully the sweep will bring things on if it doesn't happen this weekend. I don't know how much I am effaced or dilated as she didn't check this week. I'm glad for Christmas because it forced to appointment to be bumped up!

Good luck with the sweep! How exciting! My friend Renee (with her first) had her membranes swept and when she came to lunch with us she was contracting and she went into labor that night! She did say it hurt and she bled so be prepared!

Good news all round for you and for me!!! Looks like my little man may well be here for xmas, his head is engaged and whilst at my appointment I had some really strong contractions which haven't gone away!!!

i've wondered about the sweep too. I'm going to ask my doctor about it at the next appt. Hopefully our babies will be here soon. ;D I'm sick of seeing my empty carseat... lol
