18-4-2008 - The things no one tells you no.14 Hair loss after birth OkMy mood while writing this blog:
Ok

Hair loss after birth:

This does not happen to everyone but is very common. I find that about 4 months after birth my hair starts to fall out. I do not mean just the odd hair but it seems like hand fulls at a time. Every time I wash my hair I need to clean out the drain as it get blocked up with hair. I thought with my first baby that maybe I was lacking vitamins or it was from the shock of birth but after my second baby I tried to make sure I looked after my body well and still the hair fell out.

After some research I found out that during pregnancy when your hair starts looking better that ever, each hair follicle produces about 3 hairs. This is usual but usually as one grows the other one falls out. When you are pregnant all three hairs remain together. 4 months after birth the hormones change and this affects your hair and those hairs that were 3 to a follicle all fall out together. The hair then goes into the normal pattern of growth again of 1 hair per follicle but I get left very thin and almost bald around the hairline. As the new hair grows over the next few months it is lovely and healthy but I go through a stage of having a mullet looking hair do and that is not the look I am after.

Tip: Hair spray during the day time helped keep the hair from dropping everywhere until evening when I could brush it out. It's not nice finding your hair in the dinner, on everyones socks and rugs or all over your shirt.
