24-4-2008 - Alcohol while pregnant OkMy mood while writing this blog:
Ok

It's always a touchy subject but should you or should you not drink alcohol while pregnant?

I am not a big alcohol drinker even when not pregnant but I will have the occasional glass of wine with a meal. My problem is that I really feel like wine or beer when I am pregnant. I don't know if it is because I think I can't have it and therefore want it or if there is something in the alcohol that my body wants.
I have to be completely honest, I do have the odd sip of wine or beer from my husbands glass. I would not knock back a whole glass but the odd sip seems to satisfy my taste buds and hold off the craving.

I would not advise anyone who has a drinking problem to do this while pregnant and I am not encouraging anyone to take up drinking but for me, I have always had the odd bit during pregnancy and have never noticed any side effects in my babies.

I really enjoyed a glass of champagne after the birth of no. 5 baby to celebrate his arrival. As baby is only getting colostrum to start with it does not seem to be a problem. I do find that once my milk is in I cannot drink much as my babies become very unsettled, perhaps half a glass max straight after feeding as it takes about 2 hrs to get out of the body and not affect the milk. This is not something I do every night and it is more on special occasions for me But it's nice to know you can have a little if you so choose.

I may get a slap on the hand from some people for even sipping while pregnant and everyone can make their own choice. The main thing is do not drink too much and never ever get drunk or intoxicated while pregnant. If you do not have self control then you are better to stay away from the stuff.

Hi, just read your blog on alcohol and found it quite interesting, in fact all your usefull extras are great. One thing on this topic is that I was craving beer like mad in the beginning and would order DH one just so that I could sniff the hobbs/malt. I have now found the answer to everyones cravings..... Bravaria 0.0% Non Alcoholic beer from Holland. It is a bit more expensive cause its an imported beer, but hey, it scratches that itch!!! Trust me its great with or without a little lemonade to make a shandy, fantastic for those hot days watching rugby and having a BBQ. The best invention ever!!!!!! I wrote them a letter thanking them, not expecting anything in return, but got a letter back a couple weeks later, and they are sending me a year supply cause I gave them the best idea ever for advertising a different target market they never thought about. Im not a big drinker, but its just been great to be able to have a beer without the side effects. Fantastic!!

Hi,

I'm a nursing student and I've been taught that the reason docs say not to drink ANY alcohol is just because it is not known how much is a safe amount. Though, they know that many woman who drink VERY little amounts (no more than 2 oz a week) have perfectly healthy babies. You dont seem to be drinking that much so have fun. :)

Mum- I was craving beer pretty heartily and was told by a friend who is a homeopath that beer cravings often signal early anemia. So I've calmed these by having a steak (which I would NOT normally eat!) followed by a sip or two (never over 2 oz) of DH's beer. And I always follow a red-meat meal with a tall glass of orange juice to increase the iron absorption.
BTW- I LOVE popping by your site and finding new stuff!
