14-5-2008 - The things no one tells you no.17 Overwhelmed?????? OkMy mood while writing this blog:
Ok

There seem to be a lot of pregnant ladies talking about the fact that they are overwhelmed. Sometimes there are so many things swimming around in our brains that everything seems so busy and you never get time to just relax. The things that are everyday tasks become harder and harder to do because we have other things we feel we must get organised before this baby arrives and it all becomes too much to fit in and we find ourselves feeling overwhelmed.

The things we put so much importance on in getting things ready for baby are really not such a big deal. As long as baby has a loving family, a place to sleep, clean clothes, milk and blankets then you are set. The other stuff is really for ourselves. It's not the end of the world if the nursery is not quite completed or you didn't get the change table ( the floor is fine) and you will still have a life after baby is born to do those last few things if need be. It does not take long to get a nursery together and I think too much pressure is put on Mums to have it perfect. Enjoy your pregnancy.

Here are a few things that help me when I am feeling this way:

1) Write a list ( David always reminds me if I am getting a bit stressed) Often things seem busier than they actually are because our brains cannot process everything properly when there are multiple things going on and it gets jumbled into big feeling of business. By writing a list you can prioritize and knock a few things off the list a day. It feels great to cross things off.

2) Get dinner planned in your head in advance. It's amazing how the everyday things can feel huge when we are not prepared. I know if I have busy day and have not thought about the meals we will have, it can stress me out. I love my crock pot for this very reason. I can get it ready and going in the morning and know that dinner is already taken care of, go off for the day and do the extra tasks without dinner nagging in the back of my head. I find I am more likely to have people over for meals even on a busy day if dinner is cooking all day long.

3)Minute wonders. If something will take less than two minutes to do then Just do it. We often put off the little things and think, "I'll do it soon", and then that mounts up and up and up until it is a huge job to do.
The things like putting shoes and socks away in your bedroom. You could do it straight and take a few seconds or leave it till later by which time you have dumped your clothes beside your bed, thrown some books on the floor, hubbies come home and tossed down his bag and papers on the bed, you do some bills and leave the opened envelopes on the desk and the coffee mug that you used. You now have so much more to tidy away and whats worse is that you then say, 'I haven't got time now," and so a new day starts and you build on the old mess and you end up with a mammoth clean up mission. I know because I have been there done that and still do from time to time.
How much easier is it to Just do it when it will take a few seconds. This is a learning process for me. I was always the type that came back from holiday and left the bags unpacked for days on end thinking I must do that and never did but it was constantly in the back of my mind because it meant more washing etc. I have learned that if I just do it as soon as possible then I do not end up with holiday washing and the weeks washing also. With five kids, washing mounts up pretty quickly so this was something I needed to get into action about.

So these are a few things that help keep me sane and able to still enjoy life with my family. I am not perfect in doing these things consistently but I know that when I do, Things run much more smoothly.

it is very overwelming to think about all the stuff you have to ddo or still do before and after your baby finally arrives. i like the idea of the list thing. my mind is always going 100 mph about what i still need to do. its hard when you have to look after the house, the hubby, the baby and go to work. there just isnt enough time in the day. your expected to be super mom.
