20-5-2008 - Baby no.2 birth story OkMy mood while writing this blog:
Ok

After my first birth experience with a baby having a very large head, I was a little apprehensive as I approached my due date.
I ended up being 5 days overdue. It always feels like eternity at this stage of pregnancy or it just shows my lack of patience.
I awoke at 8am (very much like the first time) with an aching back. I decided to get up and get breakfast organised for David and Daya ( now 2yrs old) At about 8:30 I began to get real contractions and again they came every 3 minutes. I had breakfast and then decided to have a shower to ease my back ache. I called out to David to come and time my contractions as they seemed to be coming fast and getting more and more intense. I knew this was it for sure. The contractions were only about 2 minutes apart. I remember thinking I needed to relax and not fight the contractions as I had done in my first labor.
We rang my midwife and my parents. My Mum was going to be with us again and My Dad was going to look after Daya. They lived about half and hour away so I wanted to give them time to get to us so we were not rushed.
The contractions were picking up pace and I was needing to breathe through them now. It was about 10:30am at this stage and I did not want to rush off to the hospital yet as I had prepared myself for another long labor and wanted to pace myself. I remember getting on all fours in a crawling position and just gently breathing through each contraction and visualizing my cervix opening up, while Daya knelt beside me doing the same. It was quite funny to watch her but I was definitely ready for my folks to arrive and my Dad to take her away.
By the time they arrived I met them at the car ready to leave for the hospital. My contractions were a minute apart and quite intense.
We arrived at about 11:30 and my midwife checked my progress. I was preparing myself for 3 cm like last time and thought I still had hours to go. When she said I was 8cm I was over the moon. She broke my waters and very soon I was ready to push. After about 15 minutes of pushing, out came Danielle. She was chubby and had huge thighs. I just couldn't believe it was all over so quickly. It was like a dream. No tearing, no drugs ( I hadn't even thought about them) and this beautiful baby. I really expected to wake up at any moment and find It hadn't really happened. What an amazing feeling it was. She was 9 Lbs.

Once again when everyone had left the hospital and I was alone with my baby, I just kept staring at her. It was different this time though. I had expected her to look like my first baby but she didn't. I actually felt like she wasn't mine and it took a few hours for me to really believe she was. She had hardly any hair compared to Daya's huge mop of it and she was so chubby ( very cute though). I didn't like feeling like this but before long I felt that closeness to her which was a huge relief.

I loved this birth experience and found out that my first time was actually quite a difficult birth in comparison. Learning to relax and visualize my cervix opening up really made a difference.

Regarding your level of impatience: I can't imagine you would hold a candle to most people. With 5 kids around, and homeschooling, I think you got more than your fair share.

Really enjoying the stories; they're wonderful. LOVE picturing a little 2yr old mimicking mum in labor- adorable! I'm w/ my first and already dreading the "missing kicks" emotion. Maybe I'll just hold him against my tummy for the first 6 weeks!
