23-5-2008 - Baby no.4 Birth story OkMy mood while writing this blog:
Ok

After 3 little girls we decided to find out at our 18 weeks scan what the sex of this little bubba was. I was so emotional when they announced they could see a penis. I would not have been devastated if it was another girl but just wanted to be prepared so that I had no signs of disappointment on the day.

By 36 weeks this little man was still heads up bum down so I was keen to try and turn him. I hired a rocker where you kneel in a position that is good for getting babies into an optimal position. We also went away with the kids for a night in our caravan and stayed at a place that has a mineral hot pool. Oh, the bliss of it.
I was careful not to get too hot and would sit on the edge of the pool and drop in for short periods of time. One time when I was lying tummy down and kicking my feet I felt some almighty thunderings in my tummy. It went crazy but I knew that baby was doing a full 180 turn and was now head down. Yay!!!

By 38 weeks I was ready to see our little guy and was feeling a bit impatient. I decided to try some castor oil. I knew it could cause tummy cramp and diarrhea but I also knew that it would not work unless baby was ready to come. I felt very naughty taking it. Like I was cheating God out of his timing but I put two teaspoons of oil into some juice and swigged it back. Yuck, I nearly vomited. It was 3pm when I took it.

I carried on my day feeling nothing at all and thought maybe it was not going to do anything. About 3 hour later I started with trips to the loo. No contractions just the bowels getting a good clean out. It's not a bad thing to have a clean out before labour as long labour actually begins.

I prepared the evening meal and we all had a nice meal together. I was starting to feel an ache in my back and braxton hicks contractions beginning. They were mild but regular. I was not convinced this was labour beginning.

After putting the kids to bed we watched a bit of T.V and I was feeling pretty tired. I decided to get an early night. After climbing into bed I could not get comfy and tossed and turned. In the end I got up again and asked David for a shoulder rub. At this stage it was about 9:30pm. By 10pm I started having some really strong contractions and decided that this could actually be it. I called my midwife and she said to have a bath, it would either speed up the contractions if it was true labour or visa versa.
After climbing in the bath I soon knew that things were not slowing down. We rang my Mum and Dad and told them to come over. My Dad was going to stay with the kids and my Mum would come with us. We also called the midwife and said we would meet her at the hospital. By the time my parents arrived it was about 11:15pm. The car ride was hard. I felt every bump and every corner. The contractions were coming very fast and hard. I concentrated on my breathing and relaxing. After getting to the hospital I had a huge corridor to walk down. It felt like eternity to get to my room. My Mum has since told me I was offered a wheel chair but I refused it. I can't remember that, it would have been a great idea.

By the time I was in the room, David was still parking the car and my Mum was with me. My midwife had not yet arrived. I felt like pushing. My Mum went to find someone and my midwife arrived as she got to the door. David also arrived. My progress was checked and apart from a small lip on the cervix I was ready to go. My midwife broke my waters as she thought it would get rid of the last little bit of cervix. After my waters were broken I knew I was ready to push but my contractions stopped and gave me a breather for about ten minutes. It was lovely. I was looking at the clock because it was getting close to 12pm and the turn of a new month. Would this baby be born 31st July or 1st August? The contractions started up again. We got a mirror and I saw some tufts of hair, what an inspiration to get pushing. With only 10 mins pushing Caleb Was born. He took a few minutes to breathe and was very blue. I was starting to feel a bit worried but he soon started to breathe. It was so nice to have a little boy. He weighed 8.7Lbs. He arrived 12:10am on the 1st August.

I never remember much about the placenta passing as I am usually so enthralled with the baby. All I can say is that It's more like passing a bowl of jelly. Nothing compared to pushing out a baby. It is fascinating to see the placenta and where your baby has been kept for all those months.
