23-5-2008 - Items list OkMy mood while writing this blog:
Ok

Someone has asked me to put together a list of things needed for baby. I will divide it into essential, convenient and luxury. It does depend on where you live in the world as some countries do not use nappies but from where I come from it will be on the essential list.

Essential:

  • Clothing: Newborns may go through many changes in day due to milk spills and leaking nappies. Sometime up to 3 outfits a day.

  • 30 old style cloth nappies

If using these. This is more than needed but handy to have extra around. Not sure about fitted cloth sorry.

  • 10 Long or short sleeved singlets
Newborns tend to leak from their nappies so need changing more.

  • 10 All in ones.
By this I mean any outfit. Depending on how often you intend to wash will dictate how many outfits you will have. I find outfits with no collar better as sometimes the rubbing if the collar on baby's cheek makes them think it is a boob.

  • 10 Cardigan
Cardies or warm tops/jackets. Again depending on the time of year will decide what you need.

  • 3 Hats
You often end up with more as outfits are often sold with a matching hat or bonnet.

  • 5 Booties/socks
I prefer socks over booties as they stay on better.

  • 4 Blanket wrap
These are great to swaddle baby and keep cosey or to lie baby on the floor for a kick.

  • 10 Bibs
These are not really needed till a bit later unless baby tends to spill milk.
  • 10 Muslin cloths
Great for wiping up baby spills.

  • Bathing: There are really no essential items for this. You can use your own bath or shower. You do not need special baby towels although they are nice and soft.
  • Corn starch Powder is great but not really essential.
  • Changing: Bottom barrier cream, Cloths or wipes to wash bottom with.

  • Sleeping: A cot is not really essential until baby is on the move but is very very handy.

Bedding: Three changes of bedding is ample. I put a cloth nappy under baby that can be changed easily if any spills happen. Some sort of mattress protector is also handy.

Travel:

  • Car seat/capsule
Most western countries require you to have one by law

Convenient:

  • Change table
Change tables help the back strain and give storage for all the toiletries. I have one now but didn't with my first. The floor works just as well.

  • Push chair/ Pram
You do not have to have one but it sure makes life easier.

  • Toys
You do not need to pay the earth if you don't want to. There are many toys you can make out of your cupboard.

  • Baby bath
Often change tables come with a baby bath.

  • Baby towels & Baby face cloth

Lovely and soft.

  • High chair
I love my high chair for keeping food all in one place. You can get by without one but it is a lot more work.

  • Nappy/baby bag
Helps to keep things all in one place although it does not have to be a specialised baby bag.

  • Bouncer
Keeps baby happy when awake, able to see you and give you arms free time.

Luxury:

  • Bassinet
These are lovely but not essential. A newborn can go straight to a cot.
  • Baby swings
  • Designer clothing

  • Shoes
Not really needed until they are on the move. There are some very cute though and often come as part of an outfit.

I may think of other stuff soon and will add it as I think of it.
