26-7-2008 - My birth story Of Jaxon OkMy mood while writing this blog:
Ok

On the 26th July things started out as any other day. I had no special indication that we would be holding our baby that night. There was a civil defense alert out due to a storm approaching and were told it was going to be an extreme low. I did wonder if this may trigger off labour. The day before had been beautiful and sunny so we had taken an hour long walk around the Panmure basin.

At 2:30pm on the 26th I started noticing mild contractions with period like feeling and they were coming about every 3 mins. I was actually posting about this on our 38 week forum but I was not sure if these would fizzle out as they were only lasting about 30sec. They didn't fizzle but remained the same for most of the day. I was not convinced this was really going to be it.

At about 5pm they started to get a bit stronger so we let my midwife know that it could be the beginning of labour but we were not sure. I was still able to talk through the contractions and do everyday things but we decided to call my parents so they had time to come over if they wanted to but did let them know it could be a false alarm. The storm was now blowing hard and about 53,000 homes had lost power. We still had power but were prepared with candles. They braved the storm and came over at about 5:15. They were looking after my 13 yr old niece who wants to be a midwife so she was really excited. My parents ordered pizza for everyone but I only decided to have 1 piece in case I went into established labour. After dinner we got the boys ready for bed and I decided to make sure everything was in place for our home birth. I was actually starting to think this could be it but the contractions were still mild and 3 mins apart.

By the time the boys were in bed I decided to come upstairs to our bedroom and told all the kids to stay downstairs for a bit and we would call them up from time to time. At 7:30pm the contractions started picking up intensity and I found myself suddenly needing to breathe through them. I went to the toilet an found I had a large amount of fresh blood. This was new to me so we rang the midwife and she said to wear a pad for 15 mins and report back to her. She felt it was just due to dilation but wanted to be sure. My Mum had come upstairs with me and I got on all fours on the floor while my Mum lay across the bed. I stayed like that for about eight contractions. David started texting friends and letting them know that baby was coming tonight. I suddenly got very excited as it dawned on me that we really were going to have a baby.

I rang my midwife to tell her that the bleeding seemed fine and that I was going to run the bath now and that she could come over as I was sure baby would be here soon.
My Mum stayed with me the whole time and David came and went as the kids did.
We sorted out the bath and lit all my candles I had ready around the bathroom and turned out the main lights. David put on some quiet Jazz music. It was a very romantic setting. I felt like I was out at a fancy restaurant.
I climbed in the bath and it was bliss but the contractions definitely got stronger and longer. I was on my knees during contractions and took slow steady breaths in through my nose and out through my mouth and I concentrated on relaxing and letting my cervix open up. I could not have asked for a better relaxing setting, it was just beautiful.
The kids all came up to visit me, Caleb had got out of bed so I said he could stay up as I thought baby might be born soon. Levi was fast asleep.
My midwife arrived at 8:15 and she quietly came in and set up her stuff. She was so relaxed and non invasive. I started to feel a bit of pressure down low and I could feel my amniotic sack bulging when I put my hand down to check. I asked my midwife to check me for dilation. I turned over into a semireclined position and she found me to be fully dilated with my membranes bulging and just ready to burst at any moment. I knew that once my water broke then I would begin crowning and the pushing would start. We called the kids in and my Dad. I was wearing a crop top and with the candle lighting I was very discreet. David went down to get Levi up to come see the birth and while he was gone I had a huge contraction and my water burst with a huge burst and to my surprise I also had a head between my legs. I think I exclaimed in utter surprise " Oh, there's a head". David arrived at the door with Levi and then his body came out with one little push. It was a shame because David missed seeing the actual birth but did see me bring him up out of the water an onto my chest. I got a great view myself.
The cord was around his neck once so we needed to free it. It was such a beautiful moment and such a surprise. I did not realise things would happen so quickly after my waters broke. He was born at 9pm.

I stayed in the bath cuddling Jaxon as we all gazed and smiled and enjoyed him. He gave a short cry as soon as he came out of the water and seemed very vigorous and happy. He enjoyed staying in the water and cuddling while we waited for the placenta to come. 17 mins later the placenta came and was all intact and healthy. It had finished pulsating so we clamped it and two of my daughters cut the cord.

It was a truely amazing experience and I loved having the family all around me. I had no tearing and Jaxon latched on fine straight away.

It's in moments like these that I can't help but marvel at Gods creation and his awesomeness. There is no one like you God, your love endures forever. Thank you for our precious blessing It's beyond description how elated we are.

Congrats hun, that is wonderful and I'm so happy everything went as you planned. Isn't it funny how fast things go, and you don't expect it. I was only in labour for 2 1/2 to 3 hours before I had her, and I think it would have been less, if she was head 1st. She may have came out that fast too considering how small she was. Anyway, I'm so happy for you, oh and how big was he?? Well you enjoy your little bundle of joy.

LOVE the picture. And how special for the girls to cut the cord. He's quite beautiful, but what can you expect from such a peaceful entry into this world. Congrats, mama. You give us all something to aspire towards!

Congratulations on your beautiful baby boy. Your birth sounds so peaceful and calm, and almost painless in a strange way. Glad everything went well and that Jaxon and yourself were healthy and happy. Maybe one day when i have the experience and less complications i will get to do a home birth, i've never really heard a bad story yet. Congratulations again!

How special! I'm so happy to hear how things went so perfectly! You are such an uplifting person to know. Such an inspiration. You are a very strong woman, and you have a beautiful family! That picture is great. I was going to go to a birthing center, but we thought we were moving out of state for a while, so that kind of flew out the window. I would have loved to have a water birth in a beautiful, comfortable, place! But now I'm just trying to look at the bright side and think "hey, at least this is a healthy pregnancy and I'll get to meet my little boy soon! Doesn't really matter where I have him at this point....just get him out so we can be a little growing family already!!" :)

Your story was so wonderful it made me cry! I am so glad it turned out the way it did in the early evening with candles and a good time for all of the children to be there! I would do this myself, but our state does not allow midwife training, I would have to drive to another state, hoping maybe the laws will change if/when we have #3. Thank you so much for sharing your story, I hope it encourages more moms to make the same choice :) Congratulations again to your beautiful family!

Congratulations Mommy for the 6th time.. He is beautiful.. I wish my births went so naturally. I would love a home birth but have had 2 ceasers so i wouldbe petrified to try at home, and i also think in Australia it is very expensive to hire a midwife. but the thought that I would be in control is a very beautiful . Take care and enjoy your new son.
regards
Kate
