02-8-2008 - Update on retained placenta OkMy mood while writing this blog:
Ok

Two days after having Jaxon I was heading off to bed and had a really bad back ache. I thought I had just strained my back so decided to run a nice hot bath. It was great while I was in it but once out it returned. I went to bed. At 4am I awoke feeling feverish. I got up to go to the toilet and found I was bleeding a little heavier and then I got uncontrollable shaking. I realised that this was not a good thing and probably meant I had an infection of some sort. I then started having really painful afterpains. It was like being in labour again.
We rang my midwife who then rang the hospital for their advice and they said to come straight in. We waited until my Mum arrived to look after the kids.

On arrival I had no fever and was not having the cramping. I felt like a real fraud. The nurse tried telling me it was probably due to my milk coming in. David and I had to bite our tongues as we have done all this before and I kind of know what its like to have my milk come in and this was definitely not the norm.

They ran some tests, took some swabs and sent me for an ultrasound. They found a vascular mass of about 2.5cm and said it was probably placenta. I was admitted at this stage and was to have I.V antibiotics for 24 hours before they would do surgery. During that time my temperature kept spiking high and my heart rate was racing. They started pumpng all sorts of fluid into me plus a gel to bring my b.p up. I was not feeling good at all.

Due to the fact that I have a condition that does not allow me to have some general anaesthetics it was decided that I would have a spinal for the op. Unfortunately the spinal did not go high enough and I began to feel the operation. Needless to say it was not the best moments of my life but is behind me now. The operation was successful and they removed the piece of placenta. It was now time for recovery.

I was doing fine for a while but then developed a headache that was very sharp but would go if I lay flat. It was due to a leak of spinal fluid. There is a procedure they can do to patch the hole but I decided to see if it would heal itself.

They kept me in hospital on the antibiotcs and Jaxon was a little angel the whole time. My milk had not come in properly due to all I had been through but he barely complained. I did get a bit emotional on the doctors when they tried to keep me in one more night as it was my sons 5th birthday and we had a party booked at a playland for him and I really wanted to be there. They decided t let me go as long as I took it easy and monitored my temperature.

So finally I was going home but I did not expect to have the severe reaction to light that I did. I ended up vomiting and felt so awful. I stayed a short while at the party but was so relieved to get home to my own bed.

My headache has now finally gone and I am feeling heaps better. I am still staying in bed to give optimal healing but I think that I will start to slowly get up tomorrow.

It's times like this that I am very greatful for our medical profession and to Gods healing. It's been nice to have a compulsory rest and to take it easy.

Was the surgery through abdominal tissue, or were they able to do it from the bottom end? Keeping you in my thoughts!

Oh my Gosh! You poor woman! You have so much going on, I'm glad your mom is nearby so that you can get some rest! You better be good and stay in bed a few days, hope everything gets back to normal for you soon, I know how hard it is to rest when you want to be up and about going on with life, but take it easy :) xoxo

What a nightmare! It's a good thing you're such a strong person. I admire that about you, you always seem so high spirited and thoughtful. Ready to take on anything! Sounds like Jaxon gets that from you...being so patient. I bet he knew something wasn't right. Anyway, good luck to you and have a great recovery this time!! :)
