18-8-2008 - The things no one tells you no.36 When to call the doctor OkMy mood while writing this blog:
Ok

It's a strange thing but many of us are afraid to call our Doctor or midwife because we don't want to be a nuisance. Whether we are pregnant or have had our babies we hesitate. The truth of the matter is that they get paid to be there for us. If you are in doubt over anything and have asked around others but still feel unsure or uneasy about how you or baby are doing then make a phone call. It is far better to be told it's nothing to worry about and that things are normal than to leave it and end up in trouble.

An example of this I can give from my recent time in hospital after my baby who is now 3 weeks old. I woke up with a fever and shaking at 4am in the morning and had really bad after pains. This happened two days after my baby was born. Part of me did not want to call my midwife because it was 4am in the morning and I thought I should wait until later but another part of me felt I should ring. It actually took my husband telling me to phone her to make my decision. It turned out I had some retained placenta and infection had set in. In these situations, infection can spread very quickly and can be life threatening. Even leaving things for a few hours can make a huge difference. I ended up being told to get to hospital ASAP and was hooked up with I.V antibiotics and had a D&C and I was very unwell for the next few days.

My point is that we need to get over worrying that we are being a pain to our HCP. I know some HCP can make you feel like you are being paranoid but it is far better to be on the safe side.

i had the same thing happen 6weeks after having austin i kept having after pains and didnt get in contact with my GP till i had a full blowen infection i was told to go to the hospital to get a d&c and they wouldn't do it.
i was put on anti-biotics it took 2 more weeks to clear up.
so i definately agree always check and make sure.

Just a warning to other mom's: this happened to me at 4 weeks postpartum. Because it was almost a month after giving birth, the doctor's did not immediately suspect placenta. I had a 105-106 degree temp. and was isolated from the world. Three infectious disease doctors and several other doctors were assigned to me. I stayed in the hospital for 13 days and was not allowed to see my new baby. I was even asked if I had left the country after the birth! So beware, this can occur a lot later than the doctors will tell you. Just take care of yourself!

I totally agree i am 25 weeks and had been getting back pains and thought it was "normal" pregnancy aches and pains and i put it off for a good few days until i thought enough was enough and went to docs, turned out i had a UTI and was put on anti-biotics straight away, so what can be normal for some people can be different for others. I was worried about being a pest, but glad i went.

ditto, I had little Theo on 29th July had spinal fluid leakage due to epidural and emergency c section, came home a week later, 2 days after that took Theo off to casualty due to swelling in his groin turns out it's a hernia and he needs to see a specialist, thank goodness we trusted our instincts. xx
