26-9-2008 - Time stands still

My phone rang at 9 this morn. They could take me at 10 to see the fetal cardiologist.

I knew from the look on his face.

Baby seems to have Tricuspid Atresia. He's missing teh valve from his right atrium to his right ventricle. I'm floored but not surprised. We knew there was a huge possibility that there was a heart defect. And now there it is. So this is the hand we were dealt ans we will work with it.

There is surgery that can be done and as long as the rest of his heart continues to grow the way it shold he looks like he has a decent chance after surgery. The doc predicts AT THIS POINT, baby will need surgery at 3-6 mths then again around 2 years then possibly in his teens or 20's. Dr White seemed very positive and when I said "I don't feel like this is a death sentence" he agreed whole heartedly that there was a lot of hope for our little guy. he feels my pregnancy will be easy and uneventful for the next 20 weeks. So, we wait and see. The rest of his heart looks GOOD and that is always a positive. So THERE IS HOPE.

I love my son and now I have to trust in God.

My son has tricuspid atresia and is about to turn 6. He is doing wonderfully. He recently underwent his 3rd open heart surgery and it has made such a huge improvement in him. No-one would know that he effectively only has "half a heart". I am part of a wonderful support group specifically for right sided heart defects (eg tricuspid and pulmonary atresia). Please come join us there - the support, friendship and information base is amazing.

I will keep you and your baby in my thoughts and prayers. My cousin's baby had six holes in his heart when he was born and had to have surgery. I know it will be a rough road, but with God you can get through this.
