08-10-2008 - Michael 6 months happyMy mood while writing this blog:
happy

Michael had his 6 month check up today. He is 13 pounds exactly and 23 3/4 inches long. He is below the third percentile in everything, but is 25th percentile on the 4 month old chart. I asked the doctor a ton of questions. He says it is ok to wait til our December eye appointment about the eye that still turns in, but probably is no big deal. We need to continue night time feedings for now, since he is on the small side. He says his growth is ok, but we can boost his calorie intake by putting 18 scoops in our quart size formula pitcher instead of just 16. Doc also commented that he is very strong and has great muscle control.

Michael got his flu shot, and will get his second round in November. He also has been approved for the Synagis (sp?) vaccine. It is a shot he must get once a month all winter and it protects high-risk babies from RSV. The doctor told us that each dose costs $1500!! For the millionth time, thank GOD for great insurance!!

Also, I have gotten Michael and Early Intervention caseworker. Early Intervention is a FREE service available to all babies and kids that parents think may not be developing like other kids. At a wedding, a coworker's wife was telling me that she does EI for a neighboring county and that she evaluates preemies regularly. So, though Michael is meeting his adjusted milestones just fine, I figured it can't hurt to get him evaluated and possibly have some therapy. A friend of mine who has a 16 year old son that was a preemie says he had EI for the first year of his life. He is a perfectly smart and healthy teenager now, so it is good advertising!

We are very lucky that our little miracle boy continues to be healthy!

That is great news. It's a blessing that Michael are you are soooo well after all you went through. Congratulations your baby is so cute and looks healthy and happy. My baby has become a screamer, instead of crying he decided he wants to scream, it hurts my ears though, but he is doing just fine.

On another note my fibroid surgery is going to be on nov 20th, a week before thanks giving. The doctor wanted me to build more iron on my system. I was a little disappointed that it wasn't sooner, but it's better to have the right conditions.

Thanks for the update on your baby and good luck on all your projects:)

My neighbor is doing the early intervention thing with their 2 year old son. He is nearly two and a half and still has NO language whatsoever. I had commented to my hubby after meeting their little boy (Aiden) that he seemed awfully behind verbally. I thought his parents didn't notice until his mom told me that they had gotten this early intervention thing going, so I'm hoping it will help. I'm secretly wondering if he might be autistic. He has a lot of behavioral issues too, but that could just be because he's frustrated that he can't verbalize what he wants.

The nurse called yesterday to say they would be getting an approval for the RSV shots again this year. They turned him down last year and the Sinagis company ate the bill for all five shots! The insurance said since I didn't smoke and he only went to daycare in church that he didn't meet the criteria.Joshua has never even had a cold ,but I'm glad he got all the shots. Almost every one of my preemies were hospitalized for RSV.My daughter had it when she was only 3 weeks old.She was 3 months early and had only been home from the NICU for a few days! She stopped breathing all day long and it scarred her lungs. She even had her lung partially collapse a few years later when she got RSV again. A perfect preemie with perfect lungs:all ruined by RSV. She's 14 now and hasn't had any problems in many years, but I never want to hear the diagnosis of RSV again!! Glad to hear Michael is doing so well. Love the little ones while they're little.Joshua is in the 3-4 % in weight 10th when you adjust. a little more for his height. He's ahead in everything,so they don't see any need for intervention. Take care and so sorry for being so long :)

Wow....makes me feel a lot better about Anelise and her being 3 months early. We are going thru all of the same things. Also....EI has been coming to our house once a month to evaluate Anelise since she has been home from the NICU. So far so good, but I worry that she does not like to stand when I hold her up. She just want's to sit and not use her legs. She hates tummy time also, but we are working on it. We also got approved for the RSV shot....thank God! I was afraid since they asked me these 3 questions....do you smoke in the house? Any siblings? And will she be going to daycare. These answers were all NO, but the simple fact that she was 3 months early qualified her. Amazing. Glad to hear all is going well.

Well, I have to say, that there it doesn't sound like there is anything wrong with your son. My daugher was born late, and only in the 5th percentile for the first 2 years. She had some EI therapy until she turned 3 and is doing just fine now. In fact, I really miss her being so small. My latest son, that was born a month early, is.... 15 lbs at about 5 mths? but I was just told that I was feeding him too much. Actually, I can't get a straight answer. My husband thinks that he's really a big boy that I'm starving to death, and the nurse tells me that I'm over-feeding him. Hmmm..... Personally, I think that he's eating exactly as much as he needs, and I'm the mother and probably know what's right for him more than anyone else does. :-) Were we not due the same week? I was due June 18... and we're you told that you were due just a few days after that? Anyway, from the pictures, your son physically, has been doing things before mine, including smiling, so you should be proud. It seems like you're an incredable mother, and even looking into programs that your son might need, before he ever even needs them. :-)
