19-12-2008 - Michael\'s EI Evaluation Great! My mood while writing this blog:
Great!

Hi Everyone!!

We had Michael's Early Intervention evaluation today. He is currently 8 months old with an adjusted age of 6 months, which accounts for his prematurity.

The evaluator said he is measuring as an 8 month old for cognitive(mental) ability and for social/emotional ability!!! He is measuring as a 6 month old for developmental milestones. This is fabulous news! We would have been happy to hear he is measuring as a 6 month old, so this is fabulous news. The evaluator and the caseworker said they couldn't really tell he was a preemie.

One of the things he has slightly lagging is balling up his hands into fists when he is not using them, and curling his arm to his chest when not using it. She said he can undo these things fine and will outgrow them in time. She only worries about these things when the baby can't undo it.

Because he was 10 weeks early, he automatically qualifies for services. They gave us the option of tracking him by questionnaire or having a physical therapist come to the house once a month or so to show us things we can do for play to help him move up to the next phase.

I think we are going to accept the physical therapy. I would like someone who knows what they're doing to show us ways to help him play in case his development lags later on. Anything we can do for him to succeed, we are all for it!

This might sound ridiculous, but I have been amazed by little man's awareness and reactions for some time. It is great to hear he has already caught up to his birthday in this regard.

We are thrilled, and we do realize we are extremely lucky!!!!

Yay...congrats!!!! Our EI therapist cancelled today because of the bad weather. We will see her again on the 9th of january. It will be Anelise's 6 month old evaluation. Adjusted age. I think Anelise is behind in some things...but she is healthy, and that is all that really matters. She will catch up in her own time. After all...being born 13 weeks early is a tough ship to ride. I think in weight she is almost close to an 8 month old....but developmentally...she is more like a 5 month old...which is her adjusted age. I'm not too worried....I know it just takes time. Glad to hear your son is doing so well!
