Michael had his first visit from the physical therapist today! It went really well. She said he has good muscle tone and strength, and is meeting all of the 7 month markers, except she would like to see him sit up for longer periods of time.
She showed us how to do a side sit with him. Put the toy off to one side, and have the opposite leg kicked out almost backward. Then he will bear some wight on his arms while sitting to get him ready to crawl, and then move the toys to the other side so he will practice moving his trunk back and forth.
She also was pleased to hear about him rocking back and forth on all fours. She said we should encourage this by putting him on all fours and gently rocking him while we sing a song like "Row Row Row Your Boat" so he does it more often on his own.
She had a resident with her, and said they had early today another preemie patient who is the same adjusted age as Michael and how Michael is doing much more expected stuff then the other preemie, so we are lucky.
She said each month when she comes she will do a mini-evaluation, and then show us play for the next milestones. I am very pleased that we opted to get the PT! I just did some of the floor play to show Daddy too so we can both practice!

that is really great; I am glad you opted in as well; even just to have someone screen him on a regular basis gives such peace of mind. For whatever it is worth, I don't expect kids to sit up until 8 mos. (independently). Of course you have to start somewhere. But with age norms, the question always is at what age is the skill expected to emerge and at what age would you expect it to be well established (should always be two answers). Have fun with your new play activities!

Keep us updated on how it goes! I don't think Michael seems behind for his adjusted age AT ALL! He's such a big boy and doing so well! I remember when he was born and how worried everyone was for you and him, but it all turned out great!
