27-2-2009 - Feb. Physical Therapy GoodMy mood while writing this blog:
Good

Hey Everyone!

Michael had his second round of Physical Therapy today. I have been worried about his sitting up b/c he has seemed less interested in it every week. Well the PT told me today it is because his hamstrings are so tight. He can't balance without his knees down, and when he does put them down it pulls his pelvis out of sitting position.

She showed me how to stretch his hamstrings, and is going to get her visits moves up to weekly so she can help his progress.

Also, I am going to go buy a sing along stage for him because it will help motivate him on the sitting up!

I am VERY glad we made the choice to get him PT to keep an eye on all this stuff.

Well at least you know what is going on and can be proactive!

Saxon just started sitting up when I position his legs in front of him, but he falls over if he takes his hands off of the floor. He just went in for his 9 month checkup and the doc says that he's more like a 6 month old, but he should catch up pretty soon. I'm also working on getting him to hold his own bottle. He has got to be the most 'laid back' baby that I've ever seen. He doesn't want to do anything himself. My husband says just to let it go and let him enjoy being a baby for now.

It's great that Michael's going to get the therapy once a week now. :-)

Michael CAN sit like you described, with his legs bent and his feet touching his butt. He does indeed sit up, and has been doing it for a couple of months. The problem is he can't stay sitting up for long periods of time like other babies his adjusted age. He should not have to tuck his feet back to sit at this point. I am sure sitting does stretch the hamstrings out. She wants us to start sitting him with one foot tucked and touching his butt, and straighten the other. She said that will help him start to get used to it. Michael does eat his feet, and has for a long time though. But he does that with his knees bent. He has always had "High Muscle Tone" which is common in preemies with the immature nervous system. He still balls up his fists frequently. Holding my niece Isabella (Born June 3rd) compared to him has always felt like I am holding a wet noodle. I changed her diaper the other day, and it was super easy to put her legs back into her sleeper. His are not as easy as that.

I went back and looked at pics of D when he first started sitting on his own and just as I was sure I remembered, he never put his legs flat on the floor. His legs were always bent with his butt and feet touching, but not the backs of his knees. So I don't really 100% buy that they can't sit without their knees touching the floor... Not trying to shoot down the theory. She very well could be right, but I can't find ONE PIC of the early days of D sitting on his own with his knees touching the floor! Not one! But now he can sit that way, so I think maybe he had the same issue and sitting stretched it out? Because he never was into his feet, couldn't even grab them when all the other babies were chewing on their toes, and now the past maybe two months he's all the sudden showing an interest in his feet and grabbing them... (Run on sentences, I know... And that one was a fragment. And that one too... LOL)
