i am a little behind on my weekly update, and i don't even know where to begin! pregnancy has been a roller coaster lately....so many climbing moments of fear, then dramatic changes of relief. this week has probably been the most emotional, hormonal, scary, confusing week yet, but i have a feeling i will sleep without worrying tonight.
lets see....tuesday i stayed home sick, i was stuffy, swollen, exhausted, feverish, emotional, and i had a dr. appointment anyway. i felt inside my heart something was wrong. while i was with the midwife i had this intuition that they were ignoring too many of my symptoms and wanted me "in and out" of there as soon as possible. the next day, the midwife called me at work and said that my urine had signs of protein in it (BAD!) and that my blood work showed that i had developed Hypertension. she told me to quit work, go home, and stay in bed. she also requested that i do a 24 hour urine test, so i had to pee in this ridiculous jug (and keep in refrigerated!) for 2 days. i could explain this all in more detail, but its really boring, just tests and more tests, bed rest, contractions, bad test results......
Oh and while all this is going on, its 100 DEGREES IN PORTLAND!!!! ugh, i wanted to die. not only am i swollen like a marshmallow man, i feel like i have a 60 pound sweater on that i can't take off. it gets worse! brian decides to put me on a "no salt, no sugar, raw, simple food diet" to try and lower my blood pressure. if you know me at all, you know i love my salt.....you know i keep a salt shaker on my night stand, so this diet was TORTURE. i was so miserable, i cried, i complained.....then i asked the midwife, she said "oh you don't need to do that....just eat normally, but don't go eat a bag of potato chips". brian googled "hypertension in pregnancy" and discovered there is no known treatment other than rest to help hypertension. we made up and went out for veggie burgers and fries after that:-).
so last night, friday night, it was looking like i was going to be induced because of all my test results. one problem- there's no room for me at the hospital- its full of laboring women. so we wait until the next day, went in for an evaluation, and my blood pressure went way down, my blood work and urine tests all look great. i'm put on bed rest for now, and they are going to keep a close eye on me. this is crazy- Gem could be here any day!!! even crazier, if Gem did come, it would be a healthy (tiny) baby! i can't believe we've made it this far. i hope i have it in me to keep on going.
