23-10-2009 - QUESTION curiousMy mood while writing this blog:
curious

I have a question though, do they take your baby away right after you have it? I know they take it to a room with a bunch of other newborns but how long do they stay there and do they feed them? I want to breastfeed so I'd like to do that like right after its born, I don't want anybody giving it a bottle.

With my two girls they weighed them right in the room a little while after they were born. They were cleaned off, I had a little bit of time to bond, then they weighed and measured them, and I got them back to breastfeed. I know that every hospital is different, but this is what happened while I was there. If you are unsure or worried, I suggest you call the hospital you plan on delivering at and ask!!!! I'm sure they could tell you :o)

Usually (given no complications with you or baby) after the baby comes out - they will rub it down really quick and lay it on your tummy/chest so you can see it - this is going while dad is cuttimg umbilical cord, etc. The then take it over to be weighed and vitals checked better. It will sometimes get a bath. They will most likely then take it to the nursery for further stuff like more vitals, blood, foot prints, etc. They will finish up with you (stitch u up if c-sec) or stitch u up and expel placenta it its vaginal and get you to the recovery room. Then you they will bring in baby to you again. Most hospitals in the USA encourage you to room with baby that night (unless u want it to stay in the nursery for observation) and you will get to try and bresat feed if u are doing that and show off baby. This all depends on the time of day/ night too. Then after 1-2 days you get to take babe home. However- in the event something is wrong with baby after it is delivered they may wisk him/her away. You will then find out what happened and hopefully get to se your baby soon. In most cases it is just breathing or heart issues- especially with earlier babies. They may need some oxygen or a short stay in the NICU- best not to worry they will keep you on an up to date play by play from the moment you start dialtating until baby comes out , etc.

Question it with your midwife/doctor. My hospital used to take the baby into a nursery, but now the baby stays with you and you are entitled to go with the baby should it need medical assistance/test/etc. This is because it's proven that immediate and continuous closeness is better for bonding/feeding and for security purposes. I was surprised that the policy had changed at my hospital, so it's worth mentioning to your doctor/midwife.
