01-12-2009 - 26 week appointment overall relievedMy mood while writing this blog:
overall relieved

Dear friends

I haven't written a blog in about a month and there has been quite a few things happening. Most of you know that I had a scan at 24 weeks to check my cervix length. My doctor didn't think any more scans would be necessary because my cervix has been measuring about 3.5. That was at 16 weeks. But I didn't feel at ease about it considering what happening last time around. Physically I felt fine my heart told me to get another scan and my doctor agreed. It turned out at this scan that my cervix had shortened to 2.6 and the tech person also said there was a bit of funneling (opening of the cervix from the inside). My doctor then did a FFN swab to check for a protein that your body creates when it is preparing for labor. Thankfully this test came back negative. But I went home and put myself on bed rest, again. My current doctor doesn't believe in bed rest, but I do and I need to follow my heart. His approach was to do another scan two weeks later and another swab.

I had that scan today and am very happy to report my cervix length has gone up to 3.0 and there is NO funneling and it is closed! I saw another doctor yesterday for a second opinion and he said that if my cervix length stayed the same or got better, then I am probably doing the right thing - e.g. bed rest, so in spite of the length getting better I will still take it as easy as possible. I am just not willing to take any risks with this pregnancy. My current doctor is very optimistic about my pregnancy, as usual. He is convinced I will go full term and I hope he is right. He didn't do a swab today because he said you can't do it the same day as a vaginal ultrasound - but he did last time so I wonder if that test really wasn't valid. I have an appointment scheduled 2 1/2 weeks from now and he plans to do a swab then. He says that if that comes back negative, he is willing to bet that I will go full term. I am still considering asking if someone else at the clinic can do the swab this week as my own doctor is fully booked out. I am also still feeling slightly unsure about whether or not to stick with the doctor we already have, or go with this other doctor I saw yesterday
who seems to have a much more proactive approach. It would be slightly difficult to change doctor at this stage, I am overall comfortable with my current clinic (know all the routines etc), and I don't know how it would work financially either as we have already paid my current doctor for all appointments, before and after birth, and for the actual hospital.
. My current doctor again says no more scans are necessary and I am not sure how I feel about that, but maybe I am just letting fear control my thoughts. It is hard not to after a loss.

I did get to see our baby boy at the scan this time (didn't last time as they only measured the cervix length). He was trying to hide his face but we did get to see it for a short moment. I can't wait to see it for real, just not too soon. His heart beat was 154 and he weighs 2.2 lb. I looked at a chart and it says that is average weight for a 28 week old baby, but my doctor didn't mention anything about it. Either way, I'd rather that he is measuring big than small at this stage, everything considered. I myself had gained one lb since my last appointment two weeks ago, so that is a total of 14 lb.

Some other news.. A couple of nights ago I took a big step of faith and named our baby boy. For me it was a big step. You see, from the beginning I have been wanting the name Kaden, but my husband had to warm up to it. Well, when he finally did, I got hesitant because we got the news that my cervix was shortening and I just didn't feel so confident that we would have another baby. The thing is, Kaden means fighter and it was hard for me to make a final decision on that name, not knowing the outcome of all this.. But a good friend of mine, who pushes me when I need some pushing, said that this boy is already a fighter. I was spotting in first trimester, I was put on Lovenox (blood thinning medicine), I was diagnosed with possible partial placental abruption at 14 weeks (but no sign of it at 16 weeks) and then a shortening cervix. But our boy is now named Kaden Joshua and together we will fight for this!!!

Thanks everyone for your love, support and prayers and I hope I can keep bringing good news.
Karin

Congratulations!! Great Job Mommie! Keep resting! So proud of you. Also delighted to see your leap of faith in naming your sweet little guy! He really is a fighter! Cheer him on every time you say his name! and just remember when he comes out of the womb a little fiesty that you asked him to be!!! (o: It will probably be challenging when he is young but molded after Christ it will serve him well as an adult! (o: Love you dear friend!! Remember at the beginning of this pregnancy when you told me about God's peace in your life! Rest in it as you are on bed rest!

Kaden is a great name! I am so glad to hear your cervix lengthened! Who says bedrest or even just more rest doesn't work! I read that about 10 years ago they thought cerclage wasn't effective, now Dr's everywhere are doing them because studies found they are more than 80% effective. So maybe some day they will see that resting can help some pregnancies. I hope the rest of your pregnancy continues to be promising. I know how hard it is to be optimistic. No one can convince me to stop worrying, no how. Just keep doing what you are did to make your cervix improve. Tell them you would like another ultrasound again to calm your fears and see what happens. Never hurts to ask! I have kept you in my prayers & will continue to pray for all of us high-riskers. Best wishes! xx Michelle xx

Karin ~ I think Kaden Joshua is an awesome name. I know what you mean by it being a hassle to swtich doctors this point in the game. Many people have told me to switch doctors ~ and how my doc is not doing enough. I have history with my doctor that I wouldn't with someone new, that's why I wouldn't change. I've had the same doc since I was 19yrs old and I'm 34. Plus, you & I have probably know more than some of those docs because of what we have learned by experience and what we have learned from other womens' stories. If we have a question ~ I'm sure neither one of us are not afraid of asking & exploring ~ right? Exactly! So, I say stay with the one you have had. Good luck girlie!! ((hugs))
