08-1-2010 - 32 week appointment happyMy mood while writing this blog:
happy

Today I saw my OB about my gestational diabetes. I saw a dietitian for the first time last Wednesday and then again this Wednesday to see how my week had gone and how my glucose levels were. Some of them were too high, particularly in the morning. That was in spite of me following the diet strictly or even stricter. I am actually supposed to have about 14 servings of carbs per day spread out over 3 meals and 3 snacks, but I have only been able to do about 8-10 servings without going over my levels. My morning fasting numbers were also a bit too high and I can't do anything to regulate those. So my dietitian thought I should have some medicine as she didn't want me to eat that little and my OB completely agreed. He wants me to start on Glyburide which is medicine in form of a pill I have to take twice daily and it will help me produce more insulin - instead of actually getting insulin injections. My OB is hoping we can regulate my glucose levels with this for the remainder of my pregnancy and I am hoping so too. I prefere taking a pill rather than injecting myself another 4 times per day.

In spite of these GD issues I am actually feeling happy and excited today. I was even joking around with my OB a bit and I don't usually do that. I am 32 weeks today and simply just feeling happy I have made it this far! I am going to enjoy this feeling because it has been a rare one in this pregnancy.

Besides, a nice sideeffect of having GD is that I will actually have ultrasounds every week from now until birth to check how baby Kaden is doing, if he is growing too big, if there's enough amniotic fluids etc. Of course I don't particularly like the reason I am getting these scans but I am looking forward to seeing him every week, starting on Tuesday.

My OB is hoping I will start labour naturally around week 39. He said he was going to help me in that process, however that works. But they definitely don't let me go pass my due date because of the GD. I am hoping I will go into labour naturally and avoid induction, but whatever happens, happens.

Baby's heart beat was 152, I had gained 2 lb in 3 weeks (a total of 20 lb - I actually lost 1 lb last week due to the diet) and my blood pressure 122/72. I am glad my BP is holding so well because that was a major issue in my first pregnancy (ended up with 150/90) but it may be because I am taking it so easy as I am still doing modified bed rest. I can't wait until I get to week 36/37 - then I am going to make up for all this rest time and do some shopping and prepare Kaden's room. I am really looking forward to that. Oh, and then I am looking forward to eating some chocolate after he is born :) But most of all I am looking forward to holding Kaden in my arms, alive and well. Just a few more weeks to go.

Thanks everyone for your continuous prayers and support and love - it means so much.

Love,
Karin

Sounds like you are doing all you are supposed to be doing very well. The Glyburide should help you. If it makes you feel any better, I am on Metformin, but not for GD. It was something I started taking for PCOS which helped me to be able to conceive. I read studies that suggested I stay on it throughout pregnancy, so I still take it even now. I check my blood sugars every other day or so and they are doing really good, probably because of the medication. Glad you get to see your baby every week! That is a blessing. I am glad to hear you are in good spirits and it sounds like you are receiving excellent care. Less than 8 more weeks until you get to meet Kaden! Luv, Michelle

That all sounds really positive hun, and I am glad to hear you're in good spirits. At these weekly ultrasounds will they check your cervix length too? I completely understand how u feel about holding onto these rare moments of feeling good and positive. Its a shame that some of us are counting down the days until we give birth from a position of fear, not excitement. My next door neighbours twin boys were born at 29 weeks a few months ago and the poor little things are still in hospital with some complications. Its so nice to know that we're moving further and further along everyday and that if we keep going like this we're going to be holding our chubby, full term, healthy darlings in our arms very soon.

Glad to hear they are starting with the pills... if they do go to the shots, they're not bad. The blood thinner shot is MUCH worse than those little baby insulin syringes. Seriously, you could do it. I never thought I could and I do now! and I loved the same things, getting the pics all the time! Hang in there... (((Hugs))) Sam
