31-3-2009 - Irony Bites frustratedMy mood while writing this blog:
frustrated

i've been having a pretty tough time of it since Evan's birth on 3/9/09.

i spent this past weekend in in the hospital. i had some really bad urethral tearing with the birth. evidently, that happens in superfast labors. (my labor was less than 4 hours.) i had an ob/gyn exam last tuesday and i got my official diagnosis of the urethral tears, but the exam must have aggravated any healing that was taking place because that exam was the catalyst for the most pain i'd ever been in.

the pain while urinating became so unbearable...it was a 12 on a scale of 1 to 10. i was screaming crying and moaning so loudly that my boyfriend could hear me through 2 closed doors and when he was downstairs and i was upstairs. i couldn't take it anymore so i visited the ER late wednesday night and got a shot or morphine, which did not even dull the pain one bit!! so i went back to the ER friday morning and was catheterized, then admitted. i needed an urologist consult, but no urologist would come see me because although i currently live in nevada, i am insured in california (where i work and am moving back to next month) with the HMO kaiser. i was discharged from the hospital sunday night with the catheter still in place. i can't have the catheter in forever and i still need to see a urologist so michael, the baby and i will be making the 8 hour drive up to northern california in a day or two so i can be admitted to a kaiser hospital and get the catheter taken out. if am still in pain when i urinate, i'll need the catheter back in while it is determined my course of treatment. (ie surgery, urethral procedure or just more time for the urethra to heal while the catheter is in.

this really really sucks. i am so frustrated. i wouldn't wish this condition on my worst enemy. i'd rather go through natural childbirth again than deal with this. all I want to do is be a mom, but i'm pretty much bed ridden. i've got to heal first before i can take care of anyone. :( at least i've been able to keep breastfeeding through all this. michael and the baby stayed with me in the hospital this weekend and we have been pumping breastmilk so michael can also feed the baby.

the irony is that i planned for and had my home birth, mostly because i wanted to stay out of the invasive western medicine machine. then i found myself in the hospital dependent on their meds and technology to keep me out of pain.

i was wondering...for those of you who had hospital births, did they check your urethra for tears at the hospital before being discharged or hear of anyone experiencing something like i have been going through?

Oh I'm SO sorry you're going through this. I had 2 terrible lacerations with my first birth, which was in the hospital. I thought my tearing was bad... but your pain sounds way worse than mine ever was. It took me 2 months to heal up from that birth.

I'm sorry this put such a burden on your experience! You're an amazing momma to stay with the breastfeeding. Praying you feel back to your old self soon! =)

OMG that is terrible! You poor thing. I have a 3rd degree tear (from top to bottom inside and out) but mainly did the damage to my butt. They checked everything at the hospital and all good for the waterworks and am recovering well. I hope you have a speedy recovery from here in and keep me posted. Take care.

I don't know if it helps but when I was hurting after my c-section, morphine didn't TOUCH the pain but strangely enough, 3 Motrin did the job. Weird but the nurses gave it to me and it was awesome. If your tears are swollen, this will take some of the pain away. I hope you feel better soon!

Oh shell I am so sorry!!!! My dr told me about my urethrial tear as she was sewing up my other tear-2mins after the placenta was delivered. I don't know if it needed a suture or not. I was to scared to look . I hope that the folley cath. is helping you to NOT be in so much pain. I hope you got some strong drugs while they placed it. Folleys can be in for a month at a time but be sure to do some peri. care cause you can get a UTI really easy with the cath-also keep the bag below your bladder level.
I'm so glad that your hubby is able to help with the baby!!! This is so much to be going through. I really hope that you can see the DR soon.
