09-3-2009 - 1 Month Old - Need Advice (Please)

My mood while writing this blog:

Jayden turned 1 month old on Friday (6th March) - I cant believe how fast time is going!

It feels like he is just growing up in front of our eye's...we were looking back at pic's we took at the hopsital and he has changed so much - I still think he looks like Trav and not me :( haha but he is making noises now and smiling and I have even heard a little giggle! Both our parents have been great...they come over almost everyday to visit - but it's good cause they will bring dinner if I havent had time to cook and then when they are here I have time to clean, shower, wash the clothes etc, etc and at least once a week they stay and baby sit Jayden so that Trav and Me can go and spend some time together (It's great - because thats the only real alone time we have but we miss him heaps when we are away from him...ha!)

At birth he was 2.6 kg's and the last check up we went to he was 3.5kg's - he is fitting into (000) now and is about 54cm's long...He is still eating every 2-3 hours (which is very draining but good for him) , he is still up and down with his sleep patterns - sometimes he will sleep for 2 hours and other times he is just awake for like 4 hours (espec in the early morning's).

I figured out that the first few weeks he had really bad colic and that's why he was being really fussy but that has stoped and now for the last couple of days he has been bringing up his milk (alot of it) - does anyone know why that is?! He gets cranky and doesnt wanna sleep after he eats and then I burp him and then all of a sudden he brings up his milk but he must feel better after he brings it up cause he goes to sleep after that - if anyone has had this problem and knows why it happens can you please let me know :)

Also how do I get him to sleep more at night?! I have seen some of you ladies write that your babies sleep for 5 / 6 hour's sometimes - HOW DO YOU DO THAT?! LoL Also he will sleep on our chest and then when he put him in his cot or even down on our bed he gets up after 15min's...Do any of you ladies know any tricks on how to get him to sleep in his own cot?! There was one night that he slept in his cot all night and only woke up for 2 feeds (and that was greattttttttt) but since then he hasnt - I have tried and I do try like 5 times a night but he just wont....It's so uncomfortable to have him sleeping with us but because Trav has work and Jayden cries when we put him down.... so we just keep him with us in our bed and I dont want him to get used to it...Also people are saying to keep him awake more during the day so it tires him out and he goes to sleep at night - how do you keep them awake and for how long?! Any advice would be great!!!

Also how often is everyone feed (as in how long does a feed last) Im not sure if Jayden is getting enough or to much...Sometimes he feeds for 20 / 30min's or sometimes longer and then when I pump - somtimes he can drink 2 / 3 ounces while other times he drinks 4 / 5 - Im a first time Mum and this is all confusing (so sorry if these questions sound dumb or weird)!

Anyways we go for our next check up this Thursday - I cant wait to see how much weight he has put on and how much taller he is :) then on Monday (16th March) we have our "settling your baby" class...I really hope that helps because we really do need it!

Everything you are doing sounds perfectly normal. Af for how much BM, babies vary, and so does your milk at different times, so whatever he is eating sounds fine. Raynor slept on us or right next to our bed (or sometimes in it with me, as I always fell asleep feeding him) until a couple weeks ago, when we transitioned him to his room.
At this young age, it makes sense to sleep with or close, especially when bfing!
The sleep will come, and don't believe all those people that will say you need to supplement to get them to sleep. Not true!! Raynor has had nothing but BM and sleeps 7pm-5am now with just a quick wake-up in the middle to eat. I am sure you will start getting more sleep soon!

Destin is acting the exact same way as Jayden. In my experience, new borns lke to be near their parents, as close as can be. You should not worry about him sleeping with you. Both my others did at just a few months old, they starting sleeping soundly in their own beds. Destin is the same way. He does not like to sleep in his bed. We try, but it's only a matter of time before he cries. Once I put him in bed with me, he stops. Babies just want to feel the contact of you. Trust me, you cannot spoil him at this age and he will start sleeping in his own bed soon enough. Now, if you have your child sleeping with you from about 3 months on, that would be a problem most likely. I could just tell when mine were ready to sleep on their own. You wil know when he is ready.

Miracle 3 - Tuesday, 10 Mar
I do give mine a pacifier - which he takes to ehlp calm himslef to sleep at tiems.. If a swing or bouncy seat work use that too!! Sleeping on you is fun for both of you but many times they won't take as good of a nap this way... hope some of this tips help! Also hope you can read through my typos...

Your a good mommy #1 thought!! Always good to be open to advice or ask questiosn when working through new things and stages! :-) My little guy has now gone 4 nigths in a row 6 - 7 hour stretches! My girls did this by 2-3 months regular. ( in spite of my #2 being very fussy with reflux) We took a class called baby wise beofre our 1st which gave good tips! After you feed try to have some wake time - this is when they will be most happy as well as then you can read them if they got enough to eat. After a totall wake time of 1-2 hours nap is needed! Try givng them a nap by settign them in their crib even awake so they learn to calm themselves when they do awake in sleep and are able to fall back to sleep. ..I do feed mine quite frequent during the day every 1-4 hours!! :-) Best wishes.. Well I'm a first time mom n still prego so mo advice. But just want u to know that those questions are not dumb but very informative for us all. U sound like u are doing such a great job. Just know that u are not going through it alone I came to realize that what ever I'm going through there are at least one woman on here that is going through the exact same thing. Keep ur faith up n God bless ur family.

he should be drinking between 2-3 ounces each feeding. more than likely he is spitting up his milk when he eats more than 4 ounces.
I know it isnt desirable to have jayden to sleep with you in the bed but thats what i did until mariah was about 5 weeks. then we had her sleep in her bassenett next to our bed. I put her next to us and if she fusses I just put my hand on her belly and let her know that i'm right there. now she has gotten in the habit of knowing that is where she sleeps. dont worry about him getting in the habit of sleeping with you because in the first month he is just insecure and want to know he is taken care of. just keep trying the first month is always hard. let me know how it goes. i hope all is well. take care
