| 23-1-2009 - Relieved | My mood while writing this blog:Endocrinologist appointmenrt |
I had an endocrinologist appointment today Iam type 1 diabetic(that means if I don't take insulin,I will die). I had some high blood sugars on the 12th,13th and14th. High blood sugar can cause birth defects, so, I was concerned. The doctor said that it was too early in the pregnancy for the high blood sugars to cause any damage. He said other than those few days, my blood sugars have been great and not to worry abouth those few days. I am so relieved. Thank God. They also hooked me up on a continuous blood sugar monitor. It is stuck in the fat on my stomach and takes a blood sugar every five minutes. This will give them a lot of data about my blood sugar and will help adjust my insulin better. This is what that continous monitor looks like. It is on my left side right now. It stays in place for 6 days, the I take it back to the doctor.
This is in addition to my insulin pump. My pump is attached to my stomach ( the location gets rotated every two days. I will have to move it to my thigh as the pregnancy progresses.). The pump gives me my insulin through a tube (kind of like an IV, but not nearly as painful or uncomfortable) rather than me having to inject it with a syringe every time I want to eat anything. It is going to make this pregnancy so much easier. When I was pregnant with Daisy, I was taking 5-6 insulin injections a day. It was AWFUL! This is where my pump is connected.
It is connected to my body with a clear plastic tube that is about the size of a spaghetti noodle. You can kind of see the tubing on the right hand side of the picture.
The actual pump looks like this.

The pump itself is kind of bulky, but it is sooooo much easier that having to cart around syringes wherever I go and having people look at me like a junky when I am shooting up.I once had a comeplete stranger yell at me in a restaurant because I was taking my insulin at the table ( I refuse to go hide in the barthroom to take it like a criminal) and she thought I was doing drugs in from of my daughter. The stupidity of some people astounds me!
So, for now I have these two things stuck under my skin for now, which kind of sucks. I get to to take the sugar monitor back to the doctor on next Thursday.
And this is me after a loooooong day of chasing my daughter around. She was especially difficult today! No makeup as Daisy put all my makeup in the toilet yesterday.

My first baby appointment is next Friday, so hopefullythat will go as well as this one today did.
No peeking! How far along do you thinnk I am?...
