06-5-2008 - VBAC Birth Plan hopefulMy mood while writing this blog:
hopeful

Birth Plan - Sara Anne Wright - Partner - Christopher Wright (Chris)
Due Date: 08/08/2008 (ish)
Scheduled to deliver at St. Joseph Hospital- Birthing Center

Doctor Herdman

VBAC - Natural Birth

Sincerely,
Sara Wright

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LABOR
I would like to be free to walk around during labor. I wish to be able to move around and change position at will throughout labor.

I plan to use relaxation, breathing exercises and HypnoBirthing.
I would like to eat light foods and I would like to be able to have fluids by mouth throughout the first stage of labor.

I do not want an IV unless I become dehydrated; however I understand that I might have a line placed, I am ok with that. I might wear a sock or arm warmer over it to keep my attention from the IV.

I do not want internal fetal monitoring.

I would like an occasional external fetal monitoring, to make sure baby is not in distress.

I would like to avoid internal examination as much as possible. I will try and use my words to describe the feelings I am experiencing. Please try to use my subtle sign of labor to estimate my progress.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LABOR AUGMENTATION/INDUCTION

HUGS BEFORE DRUGS-I would prefer to be allowed to try changing position and other natural methods (walking, nipple stimulation) before pitocin is administered.

If labor is not progressing, I would like to have the amniotic membrane ruptured before other methods are used to augment labor, but only after every other means have been exhausted i.e. Changing positions, birth ball, tub, walking etc.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ANESTHESIA/PAIN MEDICATION
I realize that many pain medications exist I'll ask for them if I need them.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CESAREAN
Unless absolutely necessary, I would like to avoid a Cesarean. I would like Chris (partner) present at all times if the baby requires a Cesarean delivery.
So I can view the birth, I would like the screen lowered just before delivery of the baby.
If the baby is not in distress, the baby should be given to Chris (Partner) immediately after birth.

If a Cesarean is necessary, I/we would like a delayed cord clamping.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EPISIOTOMY
I would prefer not to do forced pushing, but to breath the baby down.

I would like to avoid an episiotomy by using: massage, hot compresses, slow pushing, and position changes.

I would appreciate guidance in when to push/ breath down and when to stop pushing/breath down so the perineum can stretch. I would prefer an episiotomy rather than a tear, however I have been doing exercises and massaging my perineum to prepare for birth.
I would like a local anesthetic to repair a tear or an episiotomy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DELIVERY
I would like to be allowed to choose the position in which I give birth, including squatting or on my hands and knees.
I would like Chris (partner) and/or nurses to support me and my legs as necessary during the second stage.
I would like a mirror available so I can see the baby's head when it crowns. I would like the chance to touch the baby's head when it crowns.
I would like to have the baby placed on my stomach/chest immediately after delivery.

If the option is there, my husband/partner, Chris, would like the opportunity to deliver the baby, with the help of the Doctor and or nurse.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IMMEDIATELY AFTER DELIVERY
I would prefer a delayed cord clamping or for the umbilical cord stop pulsating before it is cut.
I would like to have Chris (Partner) cut the cord. I would like to have the baby evaluated and Chris assisted with bathing in my presence. If the baby must be taken from me to receive medical treatment, Chris (partner) will accompany the baby at all times.

No eye ointment will be placed in baby‘s eyes.

NO Hep B shot will be given to baby.

NO vitamin K shot will be given to baby.

Suctioning is ok to clear lungs and throat of fluids.

No vaccines will be administered to the baby.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

POSTPARTUM
I do not wish to be separated from my baby.
I would like to have the baby "room in" and be with me at all times.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BREASTFEEDING
I plan to breastfeed the baby and would like to begin nursing very shortly after birth.

Using a Binki or Pacifier is ok.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CIRCUMCISION
I do not want the baby circumcised.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PHOTO/VIDEO
I would like to take still photographs during labor and the birth. We would also like to do short snippets of video of the labor and delivery.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OTHER
My support people are Chris (partner) and a birth assistant. I would like them to be present during labor and delivery.
I would prefer that no students, interns, residents or non-essential personnel be present during my labor or the birth. I prefer to keep it a family matter.

We plan to bring music and would like to keep the lights low.

We plan to bring our own birthing ball.

I LOVE JOKES! Keep me laughing. I hear that helps bring the baby down too.

If we could of, we would have liked this to be a Home Birth or with a Mid-wife, but with my previous C-section, the St Josephs Birthing Center, is the next best thing. I trust my Doctor and the staff. I am looking for as Natural as possible.

Further more, we are relaxed parents and have planned for this moment. We are prepared and accept that this is JUST A PLAN and anything can happen. We are educated and well studied, so if a problem arises we can handle the un-sugar coated details.

I am aware of many options and we appreciate a nurse who is well versed in a NATURAL BIRTH and or VBAC and would like to exhaust every means possible to keep it that way.

Thank you so much for accommodating us.

Hey, babe. Just a quick note on your plan, one suggestion from our doula: Make a sign saying "Hypnobirthing in process. Please enter quietly and shut door behind you." Just a reminder for the nurse and doc that your room is different than the one they just came from. Also, doula-lady said you're more prone to hear other moms if your door is open (and you haven't got rainbow relaxation piped into your headphones!).
