05-11-2009 - tick tick tick tick relieved, excited, tired, frustrated, happy and nervous! My mood while writing this blog:
relieved, excited, tired, frustrated, happy and nervous!

Well, my twin-laden belly feels a little like a ticking time bomb today. I've just come home from 48 hours spent in hospital trying to get my contractions under control. On Wednesday morning they cranked up at about 7.30am and by mid-morning it was clear that they were getting stronger and much closer together. By mid-afternoon we'd gone into hospital - bags packed and feeling pretty nervous at the thought that they could be here so soon. I'd seen my ob on Monday and he'd said that at 34 weeks (my exact gestation on Wednesday) that they wouldn't try to stop my labour, but thankfully, on advice of the pediatrician at the hospital they decided to try to slow it down so that they could get some corticosteroids on board to help the boys' lungs mature a little more.

I had no sleep (save for about 2 hours of very broken sleep - even with a lovely cocktail of panadeine fort and tamazepan!) on Wednesday night. The contractions did slow for a few hours but by 7am on Thursday morning they were already cranking up again. I then had very painful, regular contractions (about 3.5 mins apart) for about 5 hours) when finally the meds managed to slow them down again. Last night I was all ready to start thinking about going home when I lost my mucous plug. The midwife suggested that I would have to be about 3cm dialated for that to happen and to perhaps expect that things might continue to progress. But, just to keep me guessing, I had a very restful sleep with only a few tightenings here and there.

So, I find myself at home, exhausted and dosed up to the eyeballs on slow release nifedipene (the medication that suppresses contractions) and wondering whether I will have them tonight or in three and a half weeks time. It's a bit hard to wrap my head around really, but I've resigned myself to the fact that I have no control over what happens and that we will cope with whatever we are thrown.

What a few days though!

On that note, I'm going to have a cuppa and put my feet up!
