17-5-2009 - UTI and breast milk issues sad yet upsetting My mood while writing this blog:
sad yet upsetting

Hello to all of mommies and babies!

I hope everyone are doing fine, enjoy spending time with their little ones. Congrats to all the new mommies, I wish all the ladies will have a healthy delivery if your baby is fixing to pop soon!

Sorry, I'm here to vent again. I'm so frustrated right now over the breast milk issues. Just when Victor is used to my milk and being feed on it before the bottle like every 1 1/2 hours and now I have to cut that out of his feeding time. Last night, he cried from 12 to 6 in the morning. It was horrible and tiresome. He cried so much, when I hold him, he was frantically searching for the breasts, he found the breast and suck through my shirt.
I felt so bad and so upset at the same time. I'm upset at the fact that when I first had the bladder infection, my doctor only gave me a 7-day supply and the bacteria didn't go away. I had to come back to get another urine test and waited a few days (while the infection is still going on in my body) then I ended up giving birth. Right after birth, the hospital said I still have the UTI, so again, they gave me a 7-day supply and the bacteria is still there!

After 2 weeks of giving birth, I went back to my ob/gyn and got tested again for UTI. This time they said the bacteria is stronger so they're giving a stronger medicine and I cannot feed milk to the baby until it's out of my system.

I felt sad for cutting the milk from Victor because he's so used to it now. Now he's crying when he's not being feed. He cried every 30 minutes and would not go to sleep!
At a desperate moment, we gave him a pacifier because he had kept us awake the whole night. He quieted down and finally went to sleep around 7 am!

Both my husband and I have never been so tired and frustrated. I think the next 6 days will be hard for us too because of the breast milk thing.
Oh yeah, I pumped last night and wow, I got 2 ounces of milk now, compared to a knuckle a week ago. It's upsetting that Victor don't have mommy milk to drink and while mommy had to pump milk and throw it away. :sad:sad

How are you ladies dealing with a crying baby that would not stop? I've hold him for an hour and he will stop for a few minutes and cried again. I feel so bad. I shouldn't have take that medicine, but then my husband said it's better that I get rid of the infection first than end up going to the hospital if the condition get serious. Now, we just have to take turn to stay up with Victor and deal with his constant crying. I wonder is that colic??

Oh you poor thing! Your husband is right that you need to take the antibiotics. You don't want the infection to spread to your kidneys and put you in the hospital.

Two things that seem to help my baby are good swaddling - I use the miracle blanket because it keeps the arms in place - and I let her suck my finger. She doesn't like to take the pacifier from me. I agree with happyinvention because I think I use the 5 s's without even knowing it.

Hang in there!

Wow I had problems like this as well after I had my first son! It was really frustrating - but lucky for me they tested my bacteria BEFORE I was given antibiotics to see what would successfully kill it. THey gave me the basic safe to use while breast feeding at first, then called me and said "stop taking that - its not effective, we have a new one that will work" and it did! I don't know why they didn't do that for you?

ps. be careful with mylicon drops! the simethcone (spl) just takes smaller gas bubbles and makes them larger- which makes it easier to burp the baby (make sure you are burping every 2-3 minutes in a bottlefed baby during feedings) but if you DON'T get the bubble out it can cause more pain/bloating.

colic is described as a baby that cries for more than 3-4 hours a day, 3-4 days a week- but i think most colicky babies cry more.

maybe her tummy will calm down with just forumla? also, a lot of babies have a hard time learning that night time is sleep time- there are lots of books on sleep-helping techniques. my friend suggested using the 5 s's (swaddling, swinging, sucking, side/tummy positioning, and shushing sounds) and not letting the baby be awake for longer than 2 hour period of times (if at all possible)

sometimes babies just need to vent, but it sounds like your baby might be a little colicky. maybe try "colic calm" ? it's good for baby gas, which is a big factor in why babies get so upset! our baby has been having gas issues, and a diaper rash (poor thing!) which is
what makes her cranky

good luck! its hard to hear your baby cry :(

Poor you, sounds like colic to me, my baby also has colic, the pharmacist recommended this - Colocynthis, it's a herbal remedy and seems to work for my wee one. Other signs of colic are pulling knees up to the chest, and clenching fists while crying. My sister in law bought me a low swinging chair that plays music and has flashing lights, this helps to soothe him also. Hope this helps, rem to sleep when he sleeps or you'll go mad. Goodluck. x

what antibiotic are you taking as there ar a few you could take without any problems to the baby.
alternatively if you want to keep breas tfeeding. start expressing your milk from both breasts, throw it away and when you are finished with the antibiotics, then start him back on the breast, this can be done with patiece.

Have you tried anything like mylicon drops? Both of my boys went through this phase from bout 2 weeks old until about 4 weeks where they were really fussy and almost colicy . . . .I am not sure why.

I know its awful to have to pump and dump....but its better in the long run to make you feel better!!

I hope things get better!!

this is a sad situation buy your husband is right you need to get rid of your infection. You could get kidney infections if you don't. Take care of mommy or you won't be able to take care of your baby. Victor needs a heathy mom.
