26-5-2009 - IEP meeting. aargg...My mood while writing this blog:
aargg...

This is a meeting to talk about progress made and goals they want Hailey to achieve. It was tough. She is mentally 17-18 months they say. But then they tell us that they want her to blend in with other 6 yr old kids, what? Why would you expect a 1 and a half year old to act like a 6 yr. old? Her body aged but her brain didn't, don't they get it. Their goals for the next three years are crap! I need a home school teacher locally to help me. The worst part is showing us a restraining chair, more like let's see just how mad this child can get before she gives us total control over her. They have no knowledge about autism and how to handle behaviors. I cried for her because she wanted to leave and they put her in that chair to show us how it works. The look on her face was so pittiful. Tears and fear came over this child. They kept saying how bad she was and I kept asking how come at home she is so different? I do say no alot and she has rules. One teacher actually said that if Hailey spits out water, which she has done and laughed a little as it rolls down her tummy. I say no and take the cup away and tell her do not spit. It rarely happens, anyway she said to hit her on the mouth, what the? I have 4 other children and have never hit any of them on the face. She is mentally 18 months, why would I hit her? Oh she says but we would never do that at school. So make me a bad guy so when they restrain her it won't seem so bad. I am tired and so sad what am I to do now? The law says she needs schooling but come on the goals are like using a zipper, in three years I know homeschooling could do this. If I only new someone here who could help. Her dad and I said absolutely no summer school, she needs a rest. So watch out my baby girl is going to run and play and swim all summer.

WTF! What state do you live in and what county.. I can do some MAJOR research for you and see if there is alternative schooling for her or something!! People need to understand what our kids are going through. restraining chair!! OMG GIRL....... that's HORRIBLE! I could never send my child off to school knowing they would restrain her at any given time when she 'acts' up. THere has to be something better!!

omg please tell me there is another school in your area. that just made me cry. i wish i could help you out, even though i am not trained or certified. why would they restrain a child like that! OMG i want to seriously choke those teachers. are they nuts? you cant do that to a "normal" child and get away with it, why would they think this is appropriate for a child with special needs. That school needs to be reported. I have never heard of a restraining chair. Way to give a kid a temper, and install fear into them. no i would not allow that to be used on my child and they would have a huge lawsuit if they did. i wish you lived in pa. while the school is not perfect and ive had my share of "meetings" they dont abuse the children. i hope you find a new school for her. im not a praying person but i will pray for you and your family. =)

You just gave me the chills all over! Some people have no clue to what they are saying even if they are educators! Do you have schools in your surrounding towns that specialize in children that have autism? I know in NJ there's a great school in central/south jersey... it's worth the peace of mind! I can't believe what they said to you and why would they even think about putting a child in a chair like that!!! I'm a teacher and I know my kids my push my limits but I can't tie 'em down! WHAT THE H?? I agree with jennymomof3... you absolutely get the last say! Change what you feel needs to be changed or added for that matter! Good luck... sorry I just read this... I haven't been on for a looong time! =)

My son is mild, he has ASD. I would insist on therapy. Hunter has it 5 times, 4 days a week and it is SO beneficial. For an autistic child to do well they need help from someone who is experienced in this, to teach them the skills they need. Here is a very good site that is very active like this site on ASD's. Although based in the UK they have alot of information and experience and surely give you guidance (()) I am Huntersmomma on it ~ http://www.asdfriendly.org/board/ You are NOT alone. I would copy this blog and register there and post it and see what they have to say ~ I guarantee you will get a HUGE hug and some very helpful advice. Be sure you mention you are in the states since therapies/evaluations I've seen vary in UK to here. hugs ~

That is just terrible, children with autism need patience and understanding not rigid punishment. Does your area have school for kids with special needs ? And I'm sorry but as a nurse i have been spit on, hit, bitten, scraped and i have never restrained anyone so what the hell give that school any right to even suggest or use a punishment like that ,mabye the need some competent teachers who are trained to work with autistic kids.
