12-6-2009 - Now considered HIGH RISK!!! SadMy mood while writing this blog:
Sad

I went to see my family doctor yesterday and she did the urine test on me and it came up with high sugar levels again. My doctor said they do not usually test for this until later but because of how high the level was she said I do have gestational diabetis. I was told I am now high risk. I am so upset over this!!!!!! She really didnt get into too much about it, but telling me that because I have a huge family history of type 2 diabetis and hormones during pregnancy is what causes this. My doctor went ahead and prescribed me a glucose monitor and asked me to do the lab blood test. I was also told some of the risks are having a large baby that could be stuck in the birth canal, having to be induced because of the size of the baby and or c-section. She told me that some cases it causes still birth!!! I just have no luck at all!!! When I heard her say Still birth it took everything in me not to burst out in tears!!

I did not eat or drink anything but water since 9pm last night, and this morning I got up and tested my blood on the new monitor. The test came up pretty high especially for the fact i had not eaten or drank anything.. It was at 9.7 The normal levels are from 3-7. I left and went to the lab to do the blood test. They gave me this really gross sugary orange drink and made me sit for an hour then took my blood. I had a really hard time keeping the drink down but made it. The nurse advised me that if the levels come back really high they will make me come back to yet another blood test but this one they will give me a larger drink and make me sit for two hours before taking my blood. They are trying to find out how bad it is and if I will need insulin or not.

I am going to see the new ob next week. They bumped me up. Hopefully I will find out more when I see her.

I am so scared and worried for this baby. Sometimes I just feel like all odds are against me to finally have children. I am really depressed right now and to top it off my mother is in the hospital and not doing very well at all.

I am so sorry. I know this is scary for you. I am a diabetes educator and educate moms-to-be quite frequently so feel free to ask me questions. Don't be too alarmed at the 9.7 because you had been fasting. That test is an average of the past 60 to 90 days so that includes before meAls and after meals. There is a higher chance of a successful pregnancy than anything bad happening. Even if you have to take insulin, it is not that bad of a thing. Just know you are doing this for the baby and by taking medication, eating right & exercising, you should have a successful pregnancy. Think positive. I'm here for you.

Hi just wanted to tell you I am in the same boat. I also have GD and have to check my blood sugar 4 times a day. I have been controlling mine with diet so far and I saw my doctor yesterday and she doesn't want me on meds now. Her biggest concern was a big baby. I know that there are other concerns but just remember that is can be controlled and everything will be fine. Wish you the best and try not to worry...

dont know to much about gd but I hope everything is okay. I have only ever heard stories of big babies and sections. Hope everything will be okay with your mom, what is she in for?

i agree with the other ladies, as long as its properly managed the risk of still birth is very low. try not to stress too much!!!!

They are catching it early which is good. This will help you and the baby. I am sure everything will be fine. A lot of people get gestational diabeties and go along and have healthy babies.

Stillborn deaths would be a threat if it wasn't diagnosed and nothing was done. Even then it would be rare. Seriously hun, I had it and all you need to do is watch what you eat, a nutritionist will help you and guide you when you need to eat and what foods are okay and what should be avoided. More than likely they will induce you around 38-39 weeks which also reduces your chances of complications. They will keep an eye on this so try enjoying your pregnancy hun.

Do not worry yourself too much! I had gestational diabetes with my last pregnancy and I had a beautifel little girl 6.5 lbs! Take a 15 minute walk after every meal and meet with a nutritionist and you will be fine! If the baby is too large for a vaginal delivery the dr will schedule a c section. I have never heard the stillbirth threat however, you CAN manage this disorder and have a great pregnancy!

It is very hard but if you eat a low sugar low carbohydrate diet you can prevent all of those complications from happening. Also if you can exercise cut out all sodas and drink water throughout the pregnancy. Your chances are lowered. Your Doctor failed to give you that valuable piece of info. It is very hard fro a pregnnat woman with the raging hormones and cravings for food!! Sometimes the worst cravings ever. But you could always do a planned c-section if you know he will be too big.

Aw, that sucks! I'm so sorry to hear that. The only upside is that at least they caught it early and you can hopefully get it under control! I'm kinda worried about my glucose test coming up also. I have a family history of type 2 diabetes as well. Good luck, I hope everything goes well!
