Derek-Allan-Nunes-Jr.`s birthstory
It was a pretty traumatic birth unfortunately. I ended up with a 4th degree tear/episotomy because the cord was wrapped so tightly around the baby`s neck and his shoulders wouldnt deliver fast enough but everything is fine now! im healing nicely! So heres the short story: I got my second dose of prostiglandin gel on Sunday morning after a failed attempt to start labor on Saturday...but by 1pm Sunday I was in extreme pain from contractions every 2 minutes and we went back to the hospital. I was dilated 3cm and 90% effaced. I got my epidural (AMAZING!!!!) and rested comfortably until I was ready to push. My midwife broke my water when she was checking me at 6-7cm but I still needed just a little pitocin to keep my contractions close together. My epidural wore off right as I started pushing at 12:30am. This part of labor was pretty horrendous and I was passed out for most of the pushing at the end stage. I was given oxygen to help the baby`s heartrate which was falling because he was stuck in the birth canal due to his cord being so tightly wrapped around his neck. They had to cut his cord once his head delivered because it was keeping him from coming out any further. Everyone was screaming at me to push my hardest because now he wasnt receiving any oxygen through his cord anymore and he needed to be delivered immediately. I couldnt push him out! Finally another doctor stepped in and basically just ripped him from my body leaving me with a severe tear and bleeding that almost required surgery. Fortunately DJ was fine after he received some oxygen. He was a healthy 8lbs 2oz so no wonder he had a hard time coming out, he was a little too big for my pelvis but somehow I got him out. He was born at 2:47am after 2 hours and 15 minutes of pushing in cycles of 3 pushes every 1 minute. I never got a chance to recover from the last contraction before I needed to push again. It was exhausting, painful and Im terribly bruised all over my body from the ordeal. He was so gray when he was born, it was so scary. His apgar score was a 5 at 1 minute after birth and a 9 at 5 minutes. I didnt even get to hold him until he was an hour old. I was so disappointed because I was dying to hold him and see what he looked like and he was on the other side of the room where I could barely see him! Now that we're home I'm enjoying every moment with him! We are SO blessed and thankful for our miracle. He is the light of our lives!!
