Weight @ birth: 7 pounds 9 ounces
Length @ birth: 20 inches

Tuesday, July 29th, I went to see my mid-wife. She did a membrane sweep during the appointment. I was between 2 and 3 centimeters and 80% effaced, and the baby was at +2 station. My husband and I decided to go see Batman, but I got a horrible headache and decided to sleep instead. Well, my phone rang about a million times, and I finally got to sleep and slept maybe two hours. I had probably slept about 3 hours the night before, so, yeah, I was pretty tired. That night around 11 o'clock I started feeling some irregular, yet painful contractions. I timed them until they got regular and stronger around 3 o'clock, at which time they were coming 3 and 4 minutes apart. I wanted to make sure I didn't go to the hospital with false labor, as I had already gone 2 times before afraid the baby was coming too early. We got to the hospital at about 3:30, and I told the lady, "My name is Courtney ...". She just looked at me like I was crazy and asked me if I was going to have a baby. I didn't know what to tell the woman, I mean, they don't cover how to announce you're in labor when you get to the hospital in Labor classes! I told her I had been having contractions 4 minutes apart for an hour. She walked me and my husband to a room, which surprised me because I was expecting to be set up in the observation room like the last two times I went in. We just happened to get the room my mid-wife had told us to ask for, even though I didn't request it. Well, my mid-wife had told me to call her, but if I went in at 3 in the morning, don't call, the hospital will call her when I get there. Apparently, this was a misunderstanding, and I was supposed to call her after all. Well, they put me in the room and decided they didn't think I was really in labor and told me the doctor on call said just monitor me until my OB came in to check me. I wasn't even supposed to be delivered by the OB, but felt that since they didn't really seem to think anything was going on, I must not really be in labor yet. Well, I never called my mid-wife, and finally the nurse came back to check me, and I guess after she saw me writhing in pain (but trying to play it off because I thought I wasn't even in real labor and just being a big sissy) that she would check to see if there were any changes. She checked, and I was 5 centimeters. She sounded pretty surprised when she said it, like they all thought I had just been lying to them the whole time about being in labor. She asked me if I wanted the epidural, and I told her no, I was going to try to go without it. All I kept doing the whole time was looking at the bathroom that was right there and wishing I could just get into the nice warm shower. Now, I gotta tell you, the aspect of being in active labor and still not having my mid-wife or doula there to help me through it when I felt like an alien was trying to rip through my stomach scared the **** out of me, and as soon as the next contraction hit, my mother in law saw me writhing in pain and asked if I wanted the epidural. I said yes! So, about 10 to 15 minutes later, I got the epidural, and was finally able to relax. (I forgot to mention, right before the lady decided to come in and check me again, I told my husband I wanted to go home like a very scared child. He of course said, "I think it's a little past that point." He was right.) So, anyway, that's when things got hectic. They finally decided to call my mid-wife, and she got there about 5 minutes after I got the epidural. I told her I had decided to get it, and she was re-assuring me that that was just fine. I then started explaining to her that I thought I was going crazy because I was in so much pain, and they never even called her so we didn't even know if I was really in labor. She said she wishes I didn't feel like I couldn't call her, and that it seems if the patients don't call her themselves it seems like she doesn't get notified by anyone. I guess we should have been a little more thorough with our labor plan. Well, she checked me when she got there about 5 minutes after I got the epidural, and I was 8 centimeters and she decided to break my water, so by this time people are rushing around like crazy trying to get the room set-up because it was finally obvious that I was about to have this baby. She did a few things, then checked me again about 5 or 10 minutes later, and I was already 10! But, the baby was still at +2 station and they wanted her to be at +1 station for me to push. (Oh, and by the way, I had been diagnosed with GBS, so I was supposed to have antibiotics in my IV drip, so as soon as the nurse told me I was five centimeters I told her I had GBS, and she was like, "Oh, I guess we better start an IV." Umm, yeah!) So anyway, the epidural kicked in and the contractions slowed down, so the baby wound up staying at +2 station. I tried to push a couple of times to see if she would move down, but the epidural was so strong I couldn't feel enough to push, so they decided to wait and let gravity help her move down, so from that point we waiting two hours, with the baby head placed firmly in my croch, while family came into the room to visit. (They took some pretty interesting pictures of me during this time.) Then, the baby finally moved down, so they called the mid-wife, come to find out they were supposed to give me another bag of medicine for the GBS, but had never done it, so they set that up, and we started waiting again, with the baby now placed even more firmly in my croch! It took about 30 minutes for the medicine to finish, and then it was time to push!! This was around 12:00 PM. So, I started timing the contractions at 11:00 PM Tuesday night, we got to the hospital about 3:30 AM Wednesday, around 5 AM the contractions were pretty painful, around 8 AM the nurse finally came to check me again and I was 5 centimeters, I got the epidural at about 8:20 AM, around 8:30 the mid-wife got there and I was 8 centimeters, around 9 AM I was 10 centimeters, and around 12 PM it was finally time to push. So, my mid-wife came back, and they got me all set up to push, with little handles on the side of the bed, and set up a mirror so I could watch as the baby came out. Before I even started pushing she moved my vaginals out of the way and we could see the babies head! She had black hair, just as I had predicted. I admit, I was pretty much scared ****less at this point, but, I wanted my baby so bad, and I knew there was no turning back now, so, I grabbed those handle bars and gave it all that was in me. I started out a little easier at first, and then finally was at full throttle, pushing like there was no tomorrow. It was pretty neat to hear the mid-wife go from, "Come on Courtney, push a little bit harder." to "Yes! That's it! You're doing great! Can you see her?! Here she comes!" It was so exciting to be able to watch her little head as it was coming out!! It was the most amazing thing ever to know that I was actaully doing this, bringing my baby into the world, and I was getting her there all by myself, with just words of encouragment and my husbands hand rested against my cheek, gently rubbing as I rubbed back. It was funny to watch the mid-wife and nurse keep looking up at the TV which was on an HGTV house remodeling show as this head was sitting firmly at the base of my vaginals! All I was watching was my baby in the mirror just behind my mid-wifes shoulder. I couldn't wait for the next contraction to come so I could hurry up and get her out of there. I just kept asking, "Is that a contraction? Can I push now?" It was the most beautiful thing I've ever experienced in my life. Finally, as the babies head began to crown, I realized this was finally it, and gave the hardest pushes I could muster, and within maybe a minute or so, the mid-wife said, "Okay, Courtney, reach down and take your baby!" I let go of the bars and reached forward anxiously, and, within seconds, there she was, laying on my chest, warm and slipperly, and all I could do was stare at her, and realize she was finally here, and she was mine. I finally looked up at my husband, and he had a tear in his eye, and a look of shear amazement. I looked at him and said something to the extent of, "Do you see her?" He just kept staring at her and moved his head as if to say, "Yeah, I do." Well, the nurse finally took her to clean her and weigh her after my husband cut the umbilical cord, and it was then that I realized my mid-wife somewhat frantically trying to sew up my nether regends. I had sussained a second degree tear, and upon noticing this, I began to shake vilently. I think this was partly because of the epidural, and partly because I've never had any kind of surgery or anything, so the entire concept of seeing myself in that kind of condition made me panic somewhat. I tried to concentrate on my baby until it was done, as my husband held her next to me so I could watch her. He looked concerned about what was going on, but they had moved the mirror so that I couldn't see what was happening, so I didn't know, and he did everything he could to act as if it was nothing and distract me with the baby so I wouldn't worry so much. So, finally, we reach the ending. At 12:51 PM, July 30th, 2008, there we were, me, and my beautiful family!
