Cerys`s birthstory

I started having contractions at about 6pm on Sunday night but they didn`t become regular for ages. I stayed at home until they were 5 minutes apart and then went into the hospital at about 7pm on Monday night. By that time I was 3cm`s dialated so they kept me in.

I used a tens machine through the night because I was taking the contractions in my back and that is the worse type of pain ever. It turns out that this was because Cerys was a bit transverse - I`m glad that it worked because that pain was worse than anything else that went on!!

I thought my waters broke the following morning but I think it was just more of my plug and a bit of a leak!!! However, when they done an internal to check to see if it was my waters it turned out that I was 5cm`s dialated and therefore in active labour so I was sent upstairs to the labour ward.

I got upstairs about 0830 on the Tuesday morning and the long wait started. The trace machine wasn`t working properly though (well, I don`t think so anyway) because it wasn`t picking up Cery`s heartbeat properly and it wasn`t picking up my contractions. They said I was taking about 3 contractions in 10 minutes and they didn`t really get any closer together until the very end and by that time they had put me on the drip to get the contractions going. They hadbroken my waters first thing and they also had to put an internal heart monitor on Cery`s just to keep a wee eye on her but she was fine - just a bit sleepy they said.

By about 6pm I was fully dialated but Cerys was still turned the wrong way. They asked me to hold on for a wee bit to giver her time so that it would be a bit easier for me - I don`t know how I managed that at all but I did! By about 1825 I was checked again and she had turned - time to start the hard work!!! I started pushing and I pushed with everything I had. Ian kept holding my head which helped no-end - don`t know why it just did, I felt comfortable with it! After about 4 pushes she was crowning and we got to feel her head - Ian even got to have a wee look for himself! I always thought I wouldn`t like that but by that time I wasn`t really caring to be honest!! Next push and the head and shoulders were out, they checked to make sure the cord wasn`t round her neck and we started the wee pushes and she was here!! TO be honest there`s nothing much more that I can say about the birth. It definitely wasn`t as bad as what I thought it was going to be, I kept thinking `I`ll take the pain relief later when it gets worse!!!` I never had them in the end!

I had a great labour and a great delivery ... and then it all went wrong!!

After the birth the midwife obviously spent the time trying to get the placenta to deliver - it just won`t happen at all. I didn`t notice as we were too busy fussing over Cerys!!! They asked if they could take Cerys to get her checked which obviously we obliged (she scored a 9 on both APGAR tests) and the consultant came in to explain I would have to go to surgery to get a manual removal of the placenta - I was just like `whatever has to be done really!` I went down to theatre and got a spinal block to allow them to do it which was fine also. I got back up from theatre and still thought everything was fine. Turns out it wasn`t quite but it went right over my head.

While I was in theatre I lost over 3 pints of blood. I ended up spending my first night with my daughter wired up to 4 different drips to include a blood transfusion, fluids, anti-biotics and something else. I wasn`t allowed out the bed (well, couldn`t anyway until the spinal block wore off).

The next morning the same midwife came in who delivered Cerys and was saying how disappointed she was how it ended up. I had done everything myself and I had done it well (even I thought so) and yet I still ended up in theatre. So we ended up having to stay in hospital for a bit longer so they could keep an eye on my blood levels. By the time we left they were at 7.1 and still climbing!

However, I didn`t tear or cut and even though I was exhausted (having been up for 2 nights having contractions) I done it and she`s here. To me and her Dad, she is the most precious thing in the whole world (I know I know, everyone says that) and I would go through the whole lot again in a split second just to get her. The love that you feel for your child is completely uncomprehendable and un-negotionable. It`s complete, my whole life is complete with her in it now and I don`t know what I would have done if we didn`t have her. Of course it is extremely tiring but when she looks at us with those big blue eyes it just makes it all worth it!!!
