Silas-Abraham`s birthstory
I showed up at the hospital at 5 a.m. for my scheduled induction. The nurses got me signed in and the IV for fluids etc started and put me on the monitor. I was already having contractions about 5 mins apart.
At about 6 the nurse started the Pitocin and about 6:30-6:45 my doctor came in and broke my water. My contractions started to get very strong at this point. I stayed really focused and made a point to keep my face and jaw relaxed and took slow deep breaths to get through them. About 45 mins later I requested the Epidural. It was a piece of cake getting it as I expected it to be. I had to be stuck twice but I did not feel much because of the Lidocaine they inject you with prior to the actual Epidural needle.
I was told it would take 15-30 mins for full effects of the epidural to be felt. I never got full relief so after about an hour and a half of noticing the contractions getting worse instead of better I called the nurse and the anesthesiologist came in and adjusted it.
At 12:30 my doctor came in and checked me and said was completely dialated but he wanted to wait about 30 mins to let the baby come down a bit more before pushing. At this time my Epidural was turned off to allow sensation to return so I could feel where to push and better control the pushes. About 30-45 mins after that the nurse started me to pushing in 4 sets of pushing for 10 seconds per contraction. After about 4 sets of pushing with the nurse, my doctor comes in to take over because he was starting to crown. On the beginning of the third set of pushes with my doctor out came Silas`s head, the next push this body. So a total of 7-8 sets of pushing four times and maybe 20 minutes of pushing total. Of course I cried when I saw him and heard his first cries. He i perfect. Apgars 9 and 9.
I did end up with a 2nd degree tear that took about 30 mins to stitch up. It is very sore tonight but worth it! All in all I labored a little more than half without an Epidural and the rest with it. It was a great experience and I could not have asked for anything more.
